You will have to tell us what did happen in September 1976......

We danced in the first rain since April.

Phenomenal rain here, I’ve lived here (probably wettest area in southern England) for 10 years and never experienced anything like it. Only an hour or two of rain- but pub, primary school all flooded, primary school playground about 4 and a half foot deep of water.

That's what I'd been thinking this afternoon: I saw storms around us yesterday but not a cough at home.  Until mid-afternoon today, then the heavens opened for an hour.  It brought back memories of September 1976!

AJS you won't remember that but fear not - you'll get rain.  Or the usual mist up on Crowborough Beacon!

I remember the long , hot summer of 76 . It was dry from March to September . It was hot but I don't think it reached the mid 30s like happens now .

The rain seems to be incredibly patchy across the country this week. One place will see a deluge whereas 5 miles away, they won't get a drop. We've had a little bit at home, but we've had next to nothing on a large planting site we're doing (where we want the rain) and loads on a forestry site (where we don't want the rain).

Localised thunder storms doing their work I guess.

Is that a uthenism?

Er - no...   the weather had been warm/hot and bone dry for 5 months; we rejoiced when it finally did rain.

No, nothing like the extreme heat but it was mid-20s for weeks on end wasn't it?

Yes , sorta 24-25 type of thing with the occasional peak into the low to mid 30s .  It was the length of the drought that was remarkable  . We seem to get low to mid 30s constantly when it happens now .
