Yew the hottest by far - it's like good quality coal, not a lot of flame but very,very hot burning and lasts well with the air choked down.

Sycamore: easy to split, and dries the quickest.

Ash: Easy to split and burns hot.

Cheery: you can not beet the smell of burning cherry, sweeeeeeeeeet.

But i am not fussy, if it can be split, seasoned, and burned i will burn it !

Ash is great, of course, but it doesn't burn green like the myths say.

I've burnt Ash within hours of felling it, winter felled is best.

 

I'm not saying its a good idea, but it does burn very well green.

Cherry is best imo. Unfortunately I've sold all mine, infact I have no hardwood left at all and people are still phoning for wood. Today I'm burning green Ash and well seasoned Walnut, a little bit of pic n mix.

at the moment i'm burning all the little scabby bits that are left over when you split by axe. almost all of my seasoned wood has gone. not sure what i'm gonna do if we have another cold spell.

Lets be honest about this. The only reason people cry out for ash and will pay more for it is because of that firewood poem that everyone looks at. If they took their heads out of their backsides they would realise that there are many woods which burn very well just so long as they are seasoned and DRY!! If you can get old of ash in good quantities and are able to charge a premium for it then that great, take advantage of the situation, but in my area we have to pay extra for it but don't seem to get a premium for selling it so mix it in with other stuff like beech, birch and sycamore. That damn poem has alot to answer for but I have to wonder whats going to happen when the supply of ash and other hardwoods becomes limited, is everyone gonna sell there wood burners because theres no more ash, no they will have to start burning a bit of softwood mixed in and then they will wonder what all the fuss was all about in the past.

I've met very few people who have even heard of that poem.

 

Ash is popular because it splits easy and burns well when unseasoned most timber is sold insufficiently seasoned, so people think Ash is the best fire wood, if they dried there other timber correctly they would learn the truth.

I sometimes have a bit of an experiment.

 

I often make the next log I throw on a fire a fresh cut green one just for experimental purposes.

 

I could throw on a bit of green ash right now and watch it, but I've done it a few times and it doesn't seem to burn better than any other green hardwood.

 

I'm throwing on green pear at the moment, and it burns just the same as green ash on a already hot fire

 

I've got a seasoned log pile about 60ft long (2 rows of 30ft) and 6 feet high, and 3 logs deep. Some of it is 3 yrs old so I'm not short of wood, just like experimenting. Just gonna throw some more green pear on now and will watch it burn:biggrin:
