It’s simple maths like Mick said.

Look into it mate, this is exactly why the NHS is so f’d up.

Someone supplying drugs to the NHS is making £9.65 - 40p (ok, 80p for 400mg).

Talk to your doctor about it.

If they don’t agree PM me.

the generics pharma are making less than £9.65 minus cost, as when a patient is prescribed a generic over the counter medication, the NHS pays the manufacturer an agreed tariff price e.g

Ibuprofen 600mg tablets Medreich Plc

Show

Cautionary and advisory labels

Active ingredients
Ibuprofen 600 mg
  1. Size
    84
    Unit
    tablet
    NHS indicative price
    £3.81
    Drug tariff
    Part VIIIA Category A
    Drug tariff price
    £4.93
    Legal category
    POM (Prescription-only medicine)
I agree it is a bit wasteful still, but not costing the full prescription price, which is what the NHS charges patients who have to pay

A bit wasteful?

As in billions.

Each item, I’ve been on  5 different tablets for years now and used to get a pre paid annual card for about £125 I think which covered all scrips. Over 60 now so not needed now

Thanks, I need to find if any of my prescription is available over the counter. I'm quite happy to avoid costs for the NHS.

A good thing about the vet who sees the family dogs is he tells us where to get drugs online rather than through his employers, saves about half the cost.

Well I'm not offering to pay for my meds; I'm on stuff that costs the NHS £1k a week!  No, I'm not going into details but there are a couple on here that will have some idea.

Hence I'm massively grateful for the NHS, the fact that I paid NI for so many years and to those paying now.  I salute you and wish you all a Merry Xmas!!!

A few years ago we had a cat that was on regular monthly medication for the rest of her life....was costing me around £40 a month, so looked online. Identical stuff was £25 so went to order and they asked for a copy of the vets 'prescription' before they could sell to me. Went to vet and they said, yes we know you can get it cheaper online, but that's our price. If you want a copy of the vets prescription to take away every month so you can buy it online it will cost you £10 per month as the prescription is only valid for 30 days....it costs us time and money to produce a prescription which is why we charge. I think they thought for a saving of 'only' a fiver a month I wouldn't bother going elsewhere...but I did just out of spite!

Of course but in my case I don't know and it might be that the  tablets I get every 56 days may cost less than £9.65 and I can easily afford that. I continue to take them because there are no obvious side effects despite feeling my blood clot was a result of a (poorly administered) jab as I appear to have had not predisposing factors to cause a problem. Apart from looking like one of the walking dead I don't seem to be in poor health.
