I knew the thing Mick was after and it just didn't click. Just down the street I lived a steam train driver used to walk to work with his lunch in one in the late fifties, I can picture him going past with his driver's flat cap and this bag slung over his shoulder.

My old man’s ragtag bag was in the 70s so could well have been from that period.

I said I’d get him a new one for his birthday once.

He was indignant, didn’t want a new one, loved his old bag.

I’ve got a ww1 canvas bag like that, it reminds me of my dad and both grandpa, hung off the air precleaner of the old cabless tractors.

I would call it a haversack, I had one as a piece bag for a good few years. Bottle of water, flask, lunchbox in the main compartment.

Highlander Heavy Duty Haversack. Manufacturer: Highlander. Colour: Olive. An army style heavy duty canvas shoulder bag...

The only thing is the lunchbox had to stand upright to fit, so you had to pack the box right!

Don't know where I left it.....

Last summer in the heat I was taking a large coolbox in the van, full of various bottles of water, lunchbox, fruit etc

I like the idea of a picnic box cooler as an ice cold drink is nice  but then went down a rabbit hole of looking which one was best and never got round to getting one.
