I despair.

Whilst I largely agree with that (cutting down trees that were 2000 years old), they probably had no idea of the impact they were having.

And by Christ they grafted for it!

Can you imagine spending a day on that saw?

This was in the Sequoias in California's central/southern Sierra. The original stumps remain from the 1880s. That crosscut saw was two separate saws welded together. Some of them are in museums.

I think the meekest of us now will be considered stupid, selfish, greedy shortsighted bastards in 140 yrs time, and I guess we are! More so than the grafters in that pic.

I despair.

Gerald Berenek explained why logging the old growth actually benefitted the biodiversity of the forest, especially with sequoia. Not that the really huge specimens shouldn't have been spared, ideally, and nowadays of course, they are. But it's not all black and white.
