Landrover 300tdi.... Will it pull the skin off a rice pudding?

What is a 300tdi landrover defender like for Towing Inc a heavy chipper behind with a box of chip?

 

Is owt that can be done to give more grunt? Or just give it a miss?

Had a 300 tdi used to tow bandit 90 no problems played with intercooler and had variable vane turbo fitted and little upgrade on pump, think we also had a fiddle in the gear boxes did 400,000 miles swapped to td5 due to emmissions still on the road now

Had one in a Defender, good tow tug, plenty of torque, achieving respectable speeds on motorways is the issue.

It is an old engine, bear that in mind.

That's fair game.... I'm only usually on national speed limits anyhow and not much on the motorway thank fully.... especially not when they go to smart motor ways and fine us for over loading lol 😆 

 

Just wanted to make sure with a nox of chip and 2t trailer it was semi respectable 

 

O ly considering this as need another tipper to run along side main one.... there's some crap out there. Mainly old crusty transits.... some landys are good value in comparison

The injector pump is only available as a recon now just remember the newest are over twenty years old

They are pretty flat as standard, to improve you need to fit a larger intercooler and firkle with the fuel pump and boost of the turbo. Unless you know what you are doing and have boost guages and can measure the EGT, get someone to do it for you.

If you fit a VNT turbo (as @dumper) that makes a big difference too.

Defenders can tow 3.5T

A decent strongly built engine for towing but full up at 7000kg they struggle and that's with the low ratio transfer box, I have had the full width intercooler and VNT turbo but removed them, I found the VNT pretty unreliable and after the second one failed I removed that and put the standard back on, the Allisport full width intercooler was OK but shook one of it's mountings out so I removed that in the end. I felt that all those mods just put the engine under more strain.
Although it's a ploder without those bits it gets the job done, the only thing I have now is adjusted the boost pin.

I don't need speed etc just something capable.... my main motor is a Renault master tipper 125hp or a 141hp Ford ranger.... 

 

Like the truck, think the rangers a bit soft for Towing.... 

 

Just want another tipper to carry a load and tow as the ranger can only tow as such a small back being double cab truck....

Run a standard 300tdi in a 130 tipper which is not the lightest of trucks, and tow when full of chips which range from TW 150 ifor 8x5 tipper and a ifor 12x6 with mini loader on. Had a load of wood chip in truck and ifor 21x6 with good load of timber on and it did struggle on 1 hill which is a sod as you can't get a run at it and it has a 90deg corner half way up. As Scraggs has said a plodder the big question is stopping them when at fully load at 7.5 T gross train.

It will be fine, never going to win any awards for speed, loaded or unloaded (although I did get pulled for speeding in mine- a 130 with a chip box- last year😅😅) .

The benefit of the defender over most 4x4s is you can safely pop it into low on the road if  needed.

There are various mods you can do to get more power out of it, as discussed above, but I took the simple, if drastic, option of dropping a TD5 engine in mine. It didn't need it but we wanted to have a go at it and it's so far so good,  we're aiming for 180bhp to start with. Long term I'm looking for 215- 2 more than my 2021 Ranger 😅😅😅 but that will take a bit of thought to do with long term reliability.
