Fair point. The game changer for me was the introduction of the Nosler ballistic  tip and custom loaded rounds matched to my rifle. Performance far exceeded any factory rounds and repeatability was far superior, though at a cost 😮

Bsa R10 .22 pushed out about 22-24lbs also an cz hmr and in process of applying for . 222 but taking ages because of the Rona. 

I’m no expert but why 222 and not 243?
Won’t the 17hmr do what the 222 will do but with the 243 you have Fox and deer?

17hmr is a good vermin control round and will deal with fox but it’s nowhere near the 222. 243 is another big step up. Better to be 100% sure of what each Calibre is is capable of and stick within its limits. Nothing worse than a wounded or poorly despatched animal be it vermin right up to reds.

Didn’t want to derail this thread by starting talking about guns / ammunition etc but they do seem to go together. The reason I’m going for a.222 is that it’s the smallest Calibre legal for fox and muntjacs and that’s all I require. I know the hmr is more than capable of dispatching both but not legally 😉.

If I had the luxury of unlimited choice it would be a .22-250  ( fast and flat )  for foxes and if stalking Reds it would be a .308 .

Id not argue with that, 308 is a great all rounder.
