Just thinking about Coronavirus and the way it’s spreading will any of or all the country shows around the country this year be cancelled including Game Fairs /Food Fairs Etc and the ARB & APF SHOWS and if so when will the organisers decide.?Cheltham is still on as they wouldn’t dare pull the plug on that.

they was on about the grand national today on local radio and the out come was let see how well we can contain it as at the time of the national is due to run it should not be that bad, they are expecting it to peak some time in may june july but they cant be sure, mayor of liverpool said we will just have to wait and make a dessicion nearer the time. there was 2 new outbreaks 12 mile south of us today 20 mile from Aintree and there is one on the Wirrell, other shows talked about was crufts FA cup final and sporting events with no spectators allowed in, i think we wont manage this virus and a lot of events will be cancelled,

I was supposed to be going to a kitchen show this week and organisers were pretty nervous about things and had set up video chat systems for many of the firms who were over from China. Lots of extra washing points being provided etc. To be honest with a vulnerable dad who depends on me for help I passed on going but very impressed with the organisers who were taking the risks very seriously. I think we are in for a pretty bleak year sadly

On the news this morning Crufts organisers announced the show was going ahead and there are to be no restrictions on entrants or flights, from Italy, which always has a strong contingent at the show.

Italy is Europes' coronavirus hotspot. Italian schools and universities are to be closed and the country is locking down, yet no controls whatever on flights from Italy into the UK. the government may as well just add the virus to the drinking water and be done with it.

Once coronavirus cases in the UK reach 2-3,000+ general restrictions on gatherings of any size, schools closing, etc. are very likely to kick in.

That's when shows or events are likely to be hit.  So keep an eye on those infection figures and be prepared.

The impact of this Coronavirus are uncertain.  Although the mortality rates overall are low [1-2%] - they aren't for certain groups.  Amongst the elderly or those with an underlying heart or respiratory condition, it could be as high as 8-10%.  So for anyone with elderly parents, friends or relatives - it's a significant concern.

Two other things.

Firstly, there is little natural resistance to this strain in the general population.  So 30% or more of the population could become infected.  Multiply that by the mortality rate - and it could mean huge numbers of people dying.

Secondly, because this is a novel human virus - it isn't well understood.

It may be it mutates quickly.

In which case it will likely morph into a seasonal disease and we'll all have to learn to live with it.

That ability to mutate rapidly may also affect it's potency.  Being a Coronavirus - it's a close cousin of both Sars and Mers.  Mers has a mortality rate of around 30%.  To put that in perspective - Ebola is 50%.

The more the virus does the rounds in the human population - the higher the chance it may mutate.

There is also some evidence that those who have recovered still have the virus in their system and may still have some level of infectivity for the rest of us.

All of this is scaring governments, scientists and the WHO.

This is all 'worst case' and will almost certainly not happen.

But, there is no question that our best chance to beat this thing, is to take the right measures now to stop widespread transmission.  So it simply 'dies-out'.

So keep an eye on those infection rates.
