Was very good money for those that could do it, for many it was the best you could get.

Yes the brickworks was probably similar to Swallow tiles but for a student on piecework you could just about make the same in a day as an agricultural labourer in a week. One of the higglers doing hazel coppice alongside us used to do it for years.

Similar to Steve's crack , thinning branches and trees between a road and a layby , thought it would be a good idea to strim  the undergrowth first , caught several bags that smelt like toxic waste , found out later that week that one of the local builders would shit in a bag in a bucket in his van and wang it in there quite often ,minging

I worked one twelve hour night shift in the factory laundry for Gatwick airport in Crawley.
My job was to collect a folded airline blanket from one conveyor belt, turn 90 degrees and put it on another conveyor belt.
6pm-6am.
Then at 5.45am the agency type arrived to inform everyone the transport wasn't arriving for another 6 hours.
18 hours of ************
There were people who'd been there 20 years....

I'm sure you could have made somewhere comfortable to wait for six hours though.

As a teenager I accepted a job to strim an overgrown back garden in a derelict terraced house. I was unaware the neighbouring house had been occupied by junkie knacker types and that this particular garden was their preferred landfill site. I had the guard off the strimmer. 2 mins in and I hit a blue bag of shit. It went straight through my mesh visor onto my face.

Mick did the first bit for the documentary.  me and Mick did the chopping for the disposal into landfill.  I still get flashbacks when I smell whale meat cooking.

Worked in a factory making factories (in kit form) one week I sat at a machine pressing metal components, the technique was pic a component out of a box place in the machine, press two buttons, remove component and throw it into a box on the other side of the machine. 12 hour shifts to make the crap wages viable...

That job really made rainy super wide conny hedge re-re-re-reductions look like exciting adventures. Even in the rain.

Asbestos removal operative.

Had to crawl under a church floor to remove asbestos panels in full face mask and respirator.

The space was 6 brick high...

That was the worst working day i ever had.

I chucked it that day
