Woody Paul was right. We did go back to insurers, who refused to fund more treatment. We shd have stuck to our guns, but we are committed now. I think it's important to make it clear to both insurers and possible future buyers that the subsidence problem has been dealt with and the mitigation works carried out exactly as prescribed. Tree-fancier123, many thanks for that very detailed advice - really helpful to have precise measurements to follow. The problem with letting it grow is that we would be continually having to cut back - not a simple weekend job with a 3m stump. We might let a sideshoot regrow as part of the hedge (if it survives the treatment) and see how we get on. Now that there is more space and light I'd rather embrace the change and plant on either side of trunk with hazel and hawthorn seedlings, more interesting than the leggy privet we inherited.

Its not the saw that's dangerous,its the idiots using it ,if it isn't a top handle it will be a ground saw used off ladders...its about time people who buy a saw take accountability for using it , maybe they will realise how complex and dangerous tree surgery is. No doubt the hse will lump all accidents together -rather than splitting them between home owners and professionals .

Yeah we used to do loads of craft fairs with my carvings and benches etc its bloody hard work some shows you dont sell anything and others you do ok but since covid we found people are just not buying much at shows galleries and shops want like half of what it sells for ,Marketplace is ok or go roadside get a genny and a ground sheet and find a nice layby ,I would get a carving bar though if you are wanting to have a propper go at carving the difference you sill notice will be mad , Rob D at Chainsaw Bars UK will sort you out with a carving bar and chain and there are loads of how to vids on line Ryan somebody he is an american he was a judge on that carving comp on the tv if you want to chat give me a shout Cheers. @Andy full Education/training wise the obvious next step is to do your Level 4. This will open the door to tree officer and consultant roles, but will also bring a lot to your every day Arb work. In the meantime, a change is as good as a rest - it sounds like you're just stuck in a bit of a rut where you are and who you're working with, and have become the go to person for big dismantles. Lots of decent firms inside the M25 rely on good subby climbers for nice reductions, deadwooding etc. I'd do a bit of market research on companies in whatever bit of London you want to end up in and reach out to them for a few shifts. You can have a lot of variety and if you're good you can pick and choose who you work for. You could keep an eye out for Arborist jobs with the City of London who have in-house teams that look after Hampstead Heath and Eppong Forest. Otherwise I think the Royal Parks have contractors do their tree work and local authorities will have a mix. As others have said IRATA /Industrial rope access is another option with lots of work in on London, but I've never met someone in rope access that wasmt working on their exit strategy out of the industry.
