Not spending money on buying crap and then spending more money keeping it going to be left with something still worthless. A twenty-year-old Stihl 066 is worth £400 running. Your blue clone was worth £40 when it arrived.
  6. Speaking to the current audience - though I did consider that - this forum (or the current active members) don't come into the mum, aunt or grandma category... apologies of course if I have upset anyone with a generalisation!

  13. Just want to share this beautiful poem.. This reflects so much how I feel about my work and play as an arborist. I choose to not use the most interesting footage with this poem to let the words sink in a bit better.

  16. Hi all, I'm new to charcoal making, did some with work years ago using a ring kiln but now I want to make it part of my business. The idea is to carry out habitat work (coppicing, thinning, glade creation, hedgelaying etc) and then using some of the materials to mill and sell and other bits to make charcoal to sell. As word has got out in our valley that we have use of a mill, we've been gifted several storm blown trees, including some Black Poplar (always sad to hear of these going over) We currently have a couple of sizeable lumps for milling and the rest cut to make sitting logs/firewood lengths although everything that I've read says it isn't good as firewood. My question is - will it make decent charcoal? I figure that as other water loving species make good charcoal (Alder and willow) maybe this will to? Appreciate any information!

  19. Screw splitter is good but comes down to type of wood and operator. As far as boring down with saw, that takes away the point of having a seat and radio imo. You learn to ready the timber and follow the grains. Anything with knots takes longer, anything straight and clean just pops in half. I doubt you would regret the purchase.

  23. Yes about 6000rpm according to Mike Acres collectors corner,I had hoped to use occasionally on a few easy home jobs, mainly because I like using the old stuff, it's what I had when I started. I have over 50 others to choose from so it wont get any serious abuse. the crank seals are not perished or damaged, but I think maybe a little hard from lack of use, I think I will have to remove them and find a suitable replacement or it will become an ornament, I'm not that keen on decorations.

  27. I did a power point presentation to explain all the different types of chipper and their pros and cons. A drum is a good way to get a bigger capacity without a wide machine as a disc is over twice the width of the chipper capacity. A disc style machine has a decent amount of centrifugal forces helping to keep it going and can easily produced the puff to blow woodchips and are easy to produce and assembly where a drum may need more assembly/fabrication time and have the need for an extra blow system to blow the chips. The majority of hand fed Chippers are the disc style and yes, the bearings let go eventually, some may consider this as planned obsolescence but by the time they got a rumble on, they have done a few shifts!
