  3. Apologies for not following up but I thought I will give update and ask few more question before I plant new trees. Bad news is that it was dead. I did see a lot of green fungus on trunk so my best guess is it was because of fungus. There was another tree crabapple tree 15-20 ft from this that is also dead but other tree are not dead. I will be digging these tree out in next couple of days and plan to plant new trees there. Now question is what can I do so my next tree in same spot doesn’t die? I would still like to know if what was the problem and how to avoid that? Any ideas to understand the cause?

  5. Wow, look at the profit Stihl are making .... The wage bill .... the rates and services costs .....
  6. I think the multifuel engines would run on anything from gasoil through kerosene, avtur and low octane petrol. As they depend on compression ignition they will not fire on neat high octane petrol or avgas as that would need a spark. The thing is they run well on gasoil/diesel but white smoke badly on kerosene, at least the K60 in the 432 I tried did.
  7. Yes the few I have the tang pokes through the handle and the tang is either bent or passed through a washer and them peened. I also have two blades where the tang has broken short (one I welded a threaded rod on and secured with a nut. The long handles one have side cheeks and two rivets through the handle. When we used Yorkshire style long handled slashers, before chainsaws became ubiquitous, they also had a collar that was driven down the side cheeks before the rivets were driven IIRC, it was a long time ago. I could take some pictures tomorrow if wanted?
  8. From memory this engine is capable of being, or is inherently "fuel agnostic" to sound all hi-faluting.
  9. I've rehandled a few Billhooks over the years, and don't recall one ever working loose. You drive the tang into the handle hard, (the collet helps to stop splitting), and then friction just seems to keep them in place. For balance; I've also seen some old hooks where the tang sticks out the end of the handle and has then been peened over against a washer.
  10. Crap. Wordle 1,068 X/6 🟨⬜⬜⬜⬜ ⬜🟨🟩🟨⬜ ⬜🟨🟩⬜🟨 🟨🟨🟩⬜⬜ ⬜⬜🟨🟨🟩 🟩⬜🟩⬜🟩 Threw away the last couple of lines, couldn't be arsed, didn't have the patience. 15 minutes is about the maximum time I can spend wrestling with a Wordle.
  11. Seems to be unusually slow here in mid Sussex. This time of year things normally start to pick up with people heading outside and finding trees/fencing that needs doing. Looked at my first job for two weeks today, started off as a load of trees and some fencing that needs replacing. By the time we had had a look at a few bits it went to just a few trees to remove. By the time I left it’s one small maple to remove and I doubt I’ll get that so a complete waste of time. Out of every 5 jobs I look at I’m loosing 4 to people working for peanuts. Recently lost a job which i had priced at £3500 + vat for two of us for a week. Guy I lost it to had come in at £1200 and said two of them would have it done in two days. Spoke to the customer a couple of days ago about another job and asked how the guy got on with the trees. Said it took them 4 days with 3 men on site….. I honestly don’t know how people like this can exist running a business. Were fortunate that we still have 8-10 weeks work in the diary, just hoping it picks up in the mean time.
  12. Hi, I didn’t plant this Norway maple but my dad did about 15 years ago and my dad never exactly cared for the trees beyond planting them. There’s an area of this tree I don’t see as often because there’s a willow bush in front, but I went there today to remove some grass and noticed all the black marks along the stem. I first assumed wetwood but now I assume this is bark inclusion? I absolutely adore this tree and I’m devastated thinking of anything happening to it. Can this be fixed or helped in any way?
  13. The tang on my hook has been peened over but I can’t comment on if that is correct
  14. Maple Trees in Longeaton offer a biomass service. Give them a call. They have a big Doppstad. Put it through there a few times if you want slurry out of it!
  15. Cheers, but I’m not sure what you mean, it is a 6” tang and other than friction from hammering the handle onto the tang nowt to stop it coming off, but how else would / could you do to it to make it more secure? I know with kukri’s they allow the end of the tang to poke out the end of the handle where it is then (peaned) mushroomed over but I haven’t seen that done on a billhook, of course willing to be corrected on that.
  16. The Husqvarna electric saws were always built in Norway, I am pretty sure they are not Makita machines badged engendered, however I will find out for sure.
  17. I knew about the diesel being effectively the standard fuel, as most can also utilise aircraft fuels or kerosene, just lacks the lubricants. As they say, very few new ideas, the real problem battlefield wise is dirty fuels. That was the brilliance of the original Otto, it would burn anything oil based. I'm sure it was a Clarkson quote, their too bothered about the exhaust than the big explosive thing being fired out the front.
  18. Hi all Can anyone recommend a company that can supply a large lorry mounted tub grinder for processing green waste , mainly hedge trimmings and ivy waste . Previously I have used Welmac UK but unfortunately they don't provide this service anymore. I know I can hire a large shredder but this doesn't reduce the material to a small enough size . Previously the tub grinder produced a compost like material. The pile of green waste has been building up over the last 8 years. I don't need the waste removing. Thanks for your help!
  19. Most tank engines were multi fuel to satisfy NATO requirements but they dropped it in favour of single fuel turbo charged diesels, or gas turbine in the american mbt. All these later opposed piston engines were based on a 1930s Junkers Jumo diesel aero engine which in UK Napier developed into the most efficient engine for maritime patrol aircraft, the napier nomad, a hybrid turbo assisted diesel. It never went into production as jets took over. The deltic was the boat and train engine that came from the same firm. When the requirement for multifuel armoured vehicle engines became a requirement Rolls Royce developer the problematic L60 and K60 engines. The major problem with this type of piston ported engine was excessive lubrication oil consumption. A trade off in war time but an expense and pollution issue nowadays. I wonder how Arcate are addressing this.

Ah! The old green 240l general waste bins have been "converted" into your new general recycling bin. The old blue 240l general recycling bins have been "converted" into your new paper/card only bin. cue local uproar from people who can't read a leaflet (we sent very little paper/card for recycling, it is burnt on the stove/composted/used in the garden, so a paper only bin is surplus) By "converted" they mean the bin man stuck a new sticker on the bins. We live in exciting times
  21. Why don't half of the cylinders stop moving at low power tick over ?. Plus aren't most tank engines turbines to utilise whatever fuel is available.
  22. It looks like a rehash of the 1950's TS3 Commer engine using gears instead of rockers.

    Homeless

Tip it onto the front, prop the lid open, stick a mattress and a blanket in it... boom, one less homeless person. If we all chip in a bin or two we can solve this problem once and for all!
