What exactly have you been provided in writing and by whom? Whilst county highway departments have some statutory powers/exemptions you need to be absolutely certain you are covered by one of these too if you are going to fell the trees. "Someone said" is not exactly that. Once you have the letter/report then you know where to start. Just watch out for the small print as most highway reports explicitly exclude trees under 15cm dbh. Might not be a problem for you with only 15 trees but these smaller trees could quickly exceed the 5m3/calendar quarter allowance in a woodland. Your biggest concern should be, however, the timescale given to you. I suggest reading the felling regs exemptions here especially 2.5 which states: "The danger exception could be said to apply only where there is an immediate risk of serious harm and urgent work is needed to remove the risk." 4 months is not an immediate risk based on my limited understanding of the relevant arb terminology. I have been repeatedly told by the FC (cannot find online guidance, sadly) that in their world immediate means remedial action is required in less than 3 months (exclusive) i.e. measured in days and must be supported by either a qualified arborist report and/or very clear photos of showing the danger. In any other cases (3 months or over) there is enough time to get a licence. I would also refer to the ash guidance by the FC offering more details under point 4.4. (especially the last sentence under this point:) ON 46a

You have just reminded me of the M48 in South Wales. It’s is always a 50mph motorway. Permanently. It is a lovely quiet motorway as the new Severn bridge and new motorway were opened in 1993 which are far more convenient for most journeys. If I ever go to Chepstow from my house I drive along the full 12 miles of it at 50. It seems to take weeks.

As a worker in the night time economy, it irks me somewhat to see the matrix signs instructing me to slow down because of congestion ahead, on an empty motorway at 3am! And don't get me started about those lane closures/speed restrictions where there are allegedly men working! 🤬

Motorway matrix signs... slowing all road traffic down to 40mph, for an accident, that was cleared the previous day.... ?! Motorways restricted to 50mph and 2 lanes, for several miles, due to road works, where the only person present is the Traffic Management employee -asleep in the truck.. Yes, I think that's the smell of heated urine..

May as well get them in before section 2 gets blended into section 1...

Well if it does the job it’s got to be worth an offer. You are right about the used market, bottom end of it is flooded with plenty of tidy good usable kit but absolutely zero interest in much of it. I’ve a pair of Gunmark Sabel SS’s in 3”, 32” barrels, cracking guns but worth literally nothing.

He'd still need his basic cross-cutting tickets. Felling small trees and aerial rescue would add value too. We can get into the murky waters of tickets being a legal requirement if you like, but not many firms will take on a new starter without them. Re: the GRCS. Fantastic bit of kit in the right hands. I wouldn't entrust my safety to a novice with no understanding of rigging operations though. There are very few people I'd have rigging for me with a GRCS without direct comms, which you did mention. We've all got towing entitlements now mate. Anyone can tow up to 3.5t, which is a bit worrying. Mark is spot on though. Experience driving larger vehicles and towing would add extra value easily. I'm not far from Oxfordshire and I'm my opinion, a groundsman who is competent with a saw, rigging and good work ethic would easily be charging £150 per day self employed. Works out at £35000 per year based on 48 weeks per year. Not saying you can demand that straight away but you'd be there within a year or two. Add in an aerial rescue ticket and basic climbing kit to add a few quid onto your day rate. It'll be an evolution.
