  1. It does sound like a completely different experience to this guy: But you would expect some level of consistency? Different site / different planner / different result
  2. Thanks £595 all day long, get it on Faceache Marketplace!!

Here is a visual aid from another forum to assist:
  4. Hi, sorry to hear you had a hard time, it will all get easier, there is a lot to try and remember and it can be a mind f**K. When I started, I spent time at a local Walnut tree just practicing throwing rope. Like Dan said the more you practice the luckier you get. Also once you are in the tree and are trying to throw to a higher branch if find it easier if you push off the trunk with your feet so your torso is more horizontal, you will then have more room to get a better angle and free you arm to throw. Beginners have a tendency to dangle next to the stem and try some weird over the head throw.
  5. It's no use for you now, but you can pay a one off fee and get unlimited prescriptions for a month or year. Handy if you have several medications for ongoing issues. I think HRT is going to work like this too.
  6. In the YT comments someone called him Lightning 'Because he never struck the same place twice'
  7. Pardon my general ignorance, I don't remember either of these methods from NPTC assessments. Have they been added? I would have thought If you put a 80% horizontal cut in a 200mm (8") tree you are in danger of trapping your bar? Unless the crown is really suspended? Also I thought spear cut was a single steep angle cut used on much smaller vertical branches if you wanted them to fall straight down rather than hinge? Clearly I'm missing something as Doug has quoted NPTC text.
  8. I got both my regular drop offs via tip site, they do take everything the client doesn't want from chip and ivy ridden stumps to logs and more desirable stuff. If you have plenty of cutting going on near you go and have a chat, if you can collect it from source they might be happy that you are saving them moving it. If you have something else to sweeten the transaction then that might work too.
  9. OK, he does come across as a self righteous twat but I agree he makes some sense. It's nice for him to say it shouldn't be about money but it obviously is: Who is going to fund more tree officers when we are seriously underfunding Nurses, Teachers, Police, Armed Forces, Social Care, Road repair, coastal defence etc etc etc. Are the rogue arborists who are carrying out the botched street tree work and abusing TPO trees going to bother complying with some additional training/test before they attack another tree? If they are already using chainsaws without an insurance and training more regulation won't work. Bringing in a minimum knowledge level and testing will only put additional costs on those companies who are already compliant and force them to raise prices. This may then push more work towards the 'in your area' 'House clearance/rubbish removed/trees trimmed' brigade. A 'tree first' approach is wonderful but unless he has managed to poach a lot of wealthy customers from his previous employment who are happy to pay him well for the perceived bugger all prune, he's not going to last too long. I would like to see him converse with the ' I want this tree reduced to X because it blocks light to my conservatory' client. I think he will be asking his old boss for his job back fairly soon and pollarding the crap out of rows of tree with gritted teeth. Sorry to go on but doesn't the title 'Introduction to Arborists' sound like a dodgy dating site where 40+ female divorcees seek 2 stroke smelling Landrover Defender drivers?
  10. The couple of brickies I've had working for me both swore by Stanley Fatmax, They gave them plenty of stick too, I think you get a 10 year guarantee. Stabila are supposed to be the most accurate of mainstream stuff but not so robust.
  11. Along the same line as this:- If the alarm is going off, remove it from the wall/ceiling and take it outside. If it continues to go off it is a faulty carbon monoxide alarm. But as mentioned before get someone in and get it checked. Better to be safe....
  12. You can buy them in the UK but they don't conform to working at height requirements for fall protection. (need to have closure protection - 3 way locking etc) If your not fussed about that or want to supplement your existing 2 ropes and compliant positioning lanyard with a forth system you can get them at Jones:- Stein wire core flip line with 3-way swivel snap (Orange) – F.R. Jones & Son WWW.FRJONESANDSON.CO.UK
  13. These have got good reviews: CMI ShemBiner - Extra Large - Honey Brothers HONEYBROS.COM CMI ShemBiner - Extra Large from Honey Brothers. The largest equipment specialist in the tree care industry.
  14. There have been threads on here before about them, the French use them a lot, I think @mickdempsey was involved in conversations. My guess is you will buy some to satisfy your wife that you won't cut your arm off but they will end up at the bottom of a gear bag getting mouldy. Arbortec do some but as previously mentioned the best protection is not sticking a topping in your forearm. 15. Hi, I have a single climbing kit requiring LOLER, I'm in Great Yarmouth, I can drop off and collect. I've looked on Find a Freelancer but no one is close. thanks in advance.
  16. You beat me to it, I was going to suggest one of the Stihl Battery saws on the AP battery system, MSA220 maybe but can go bigger or smaller depending how much wood you are looking to harvest and how big the budget is. . Saves having to worry about mixing fuels and draining to store when not in use for a long time. It is a big initial outlay but against current heating costs should repay quickly. Also allows other tools (hedge trimmer, brush cutter) etc to be added later using same batteries if you want. Of course you are only going to be cutting wood with land owners permission but a battery saw will create a lot less attention too!
  17. This rolled in my inbox this morning from F R Jones. 30% off apparently? Thought I would share. Yale XTC Blue Tongue 11.7mm climbing rope (spliced) – F.R. Jones & Son WWW.FRJONESANDSON.CO.UK
  18. Hi Jamie, This does all sound odd, for what it is worth, I sharpen Stihl .325 semi and full chisel with the 2 in 1 Stihl tool and am always amazed how well they turn out. I've really abused them sometimes doing low stumps and chicken wire!! They come back close to new. Do you have a dodgy batch of chain/ soft metal not keeping an edge? Try a different brand chain or as mentioned before swap set up?

  21. Hi, yep I've been there!! The washer with the recess in should have side to side movement so you can push it back (towards the clutch) and then there is space to remove the c clip. I found that crap gets behind the washer and pushes it forwards (away from the clutch) so there is no room to get in at the clip. Get behind the washer and cut away at whatever material is behind it until the washer will move. hope this helps?
  22. My understanding is if a sub contractor works for a company mon-fri he is an employee and needs to be treated as so with paid holiday, sick pay ,ppe, pension etc. I know of an employer who was fined £100k plus for abusing this. It has been discussed before on here but it goes something like this: Who is an employee? An individual who works for a business is an employee if the majority of the statements below are considered true: Have a set number of hours e.g 9am to 5pm, 5 days a week Must work the hours above unless on sick leave, holiday leave, etc Are paid hourly, weekly, monthly or an annual rate Can be paid overtime Are paid whether there is any work or not The work to be done is decided by the employer (how, when, what and where) Must do the work themselves Are provided with tools, equipment, computers, etc by the employer The contract is open ended (after any probation period) Have a company email address and business cards Have a uniform or use company vans, etc Who is a subcontractor? An individual who works for a business is a subcontractor if the majority of the statements below are considered true: Can choose what hours they work They quote for contracts Are paid per contract, regardless of how long this takes to complete Work for numerous different businesses Can make a profit or a loss on a job by job basis They make the decisions on the work to be done (how, when, what and where) Can hire other people to do all of the work or assist them Provide their own tools and equipment or possibly hire them The contract is for a fixed period Have an email address and business card for their business only Any uniform has their name on and not the contractor. They use their own van. There is also an employment status checker on the HMRC website to get a correct decision.
