I think the main attraction for some would be there is very little graft. I regularly see 2 or 3 Council tipper/chipper teams standing looking at a tree. They mess around for a half day with a MEWP, not much achieved, then move on. It's the usual roadworker situation of 6 men watching, 1 man working! I'm sure someone here will tell me otherwise but that is certainly the case here. I would speak to the LA regarding job opportunities, I bet they don't come up very often as no one leaves!

I feel the balance of a saw is just as important. Once it gets too nose heavy it is a pain to use. The average UK tree surgeon would have a range of ground saws 50cc - 90cc so 14'' to 30'' is covered and would pick the most appropriate for each job. US homeowners may only have one saw and decide pushing a MS261 with a 24" is the way to go. They all think Europeans are stupid for using tiny bars but they drive 7L V8 cars with a 55MPH speed limit!

Just to complete the circle on this issue for anyone else who has the same problem. The plastic worm gear attached to the motor detaches and just hangs loose on the motor. As said previously if the gear is ok it can be stuck back, it just needs lining up with the raised sections on the motor. Mine was damaged, so there is a replacement kit available from Stihl for about £18. It has the worm gear, motor shaft circlip and a spacer to get the gear lined up correctly on the motor. Lots of swearing and self tappers later all is good, I love the saw but this has made me lose confidence in it!

+1 I think it is simlar reasoning that car manufacturers enter motorsport. The public see a Renault Formula One car and buy a Clio because it is similar!! Keeping a low initial price point but a noticeable benefit in moving up the product line looks like a winning formula. Consumer is hooked with a £200 product but can see the steps into a £500 unit. Isolating yourself to one sector of the market seams narrow-minded.

Thanks, I think the ring is fine but you can buy it separately, it looks like it does just need gluing. Did you use epoxy or something else?

Hi All, This looks like a common issue but I'm confused. My Stihl MSA161T has stopped oiling. It has a rubber worm gear around the motor that has become detached. Has anyone had any success replacing these? It looks a pain to stick it back on straight. What adhesive would work? Any assistance would be appreciated. many thanks Gordon

I guess the UK equivalent is a grab lorry. I've never seen one used for Arb work, prob too expensive. They are usually 16 or 20 tons and regularly hired in construction.

Hi, Every area is different but the feedback I get is that there is still a market for domestic tree work if you are:- professional, polite, turn up as promised, and reasonably priced (definitely no need to be cheapest) if someone is ringing every arbish person to get quotes then you give your price and walk away. You could always sub in help/machines as needed. I fully understand if this isn't for you but it would allow you get away from full time climbing and potentially give you a better balance. Have you thought about getting involved with Arb training? You would stay in the industry and could still subbie climb. Talk to your local training centres for requirements/opportunities? Or... check out your local councils planning dept for tree officer positions? You have loads of experience to offer and young enough to change direction. Just few things that came to mind, hope it works out for you. Gordon

Close but no aspect ratio is 82 but generally uses 80. (205 80 16) The 'C' denotes commercial so no car tyres. Find a local tyre dealer, they will make sure you get the correct tyres and see if they will match blackcircles.com prices. If you end up with the incorrect load index or ply rating you can fail your mot or worse.

Hi, If that is how they have left it then it does look odd, are they doing any further work. The issue is that as it has been left to get so big that a smaller (snip the ends) reduction wouldn't look much different and would be really expensive due to the amount of work/equipment involved. My big question would be, 'what the hell happened to your garden?!? Am I missing something? The tree would be the least of my worries. -
I really hope you get your issue sorted and the dealer offers a solution, as a good customer hopefully they will give you a resolution. Ref Arbtalk - you asked for input in your first message! You shouldn't be surprised you got it!

There are loads of test kits out there from Boots, Superdrug, Amazon etc. Hair, mouth swab or piss test for most common recreational drugs. If you had just cause to suspect someone and they denied it this could be an easy solution. Also if you offered to get the police involved to clarify things then their reaction should tell you all you need to know. If it's a genuine error (Lemsip/powdered milk) then they will have no resistance to a test and you can get back to work. Funnily enough I was talking to one of the football dads from my sons team yesterday and he said drug use is so rife offshore that he has refused to continue with rope access because he doesn't trust any of the would be rescuers if he got in trouble.
