I got annoyed a few days ago when the young muscle on site forgot his respirator and goggles (borrowed from the boss). Kangoing plaster indoors, dust everywhere, poor lad was suffering....I had another respirator in the van but it was a chemical charcoal filter, not really for dust, though it does work. I was sore tempted to fetch it for him, but then I thought, nah, that was me a few years ago, and you learn wisdom through suffering, I'll keep shtum and he'll buy his own gear next day, and never have to suffer again - teach a man to fish and all that. Two days later, same deal - no respirator, still suffering. What can you do?

Of course, any serious bad guys out there long ago sussed the way around all of this. Quite simply, stay offline. Use 15 dollar burner phones then bin them, don't surf the web or if you do, use an anonymous cheap smartphone and don't do it at home. Keep the phone in a lead envelope when not in use....or just be careful, live normally, don't google anything weird and only talk business face to face in the woods at full moon, while standing back to back....

They have the ability to hack your laptop camera to track your eye movement while you're online, to discover if you're a tit or ass man.....

Funny how these people, Don, Hills, Barry et al - have become part of our lives. I was listening to a thing the other day about Trump's communication style - the reason he appears, superficially, to be a goofball is actually an indication of a very powerful intelligence. He doesn't finish his sentences because he speaks in shorthand - apparently a lot of billionaire do it. Personally I have no problem following his train of thought, I just fill in the blanks - which is what he intends, he is the ultimate delegator, to the point where he delegates his audience to finish his sentences for him! Trump sees the world as a mind-map, a spreading web of connectivity, not a linear road where one thing leads to another. In trumps world, everything leads to everything lease, via something else. So he skips from Isis, to Nafta to this that and the other, and it sounds like he's rambling, but he sees the connections, the big picture, he just can't articulate it to the satisfaction of most people. The flip side is his personal grievances are bound up in the web, he appears to not be able to separate them from his thought stream, and he vents, much to the media's delight. But this venting does not appear to carry over to actual policy.

How bound this one? - When guys run their saws dry and think the lean out scream is their notifier that it's time to refuel.

Getting back to Trump - early this morning he tweeted that he would like to strip flag-burners of their citizenship! Whether or not you agree with him, I for one am greatly enjoying the drama. He's the gift that keeps on giving, never know what's coming down the pike next!

Ok I got another one: not un-reeling the whole extension cord. 1400 watt tool on a 50 meter cord, with like 45 meters still one the reel. Less of a big deal with 220V but very annoying....

Working on an old stone cottage today, arrived before the lads and noticed someone had left a ladder standing from yesterday evening (to fix a down pipe). The ladder was upside down. This did not surprise me, and got me thinking of all the different sites and jobs I have works on where guys wilfully used ladders upside down. Is there something going on that I missed? Is there an advantage to upside down? Its not a case of accidentally deploying the tool the wrong way, I think there is really a belief out there that upside down is better... Anyway, who else gets peeved by this, and what other weird behaviours have you been annoyed by over the years?

Reading through the article, I couldn't find a reference to top handle anywhere. I may be wrong here but I think Mark was talking about people one-handing ground saws! I have seen experience guys buck logs with a big saw with one hand, other hand holding their fag or scratching their nether regions or whatever. Could it be thats all he meant, and maybe that was the target audience?

Yeah I think Ive found a home for it - I know a couple of people who life off grid with generators, will offer it to them. Thanks for the feedback fellows!

Ok maybe I'll chance it, I was always told that if diesel successfully ignites in a petrol built cylinder it would generate more pressure than the engine could cope with being of a higher potential energy than petrol, and cause damage. Sure theres are loads of pre-fule injection petrol cars around, I have a feeling my neighbour will chance it.

So she put 35 odd liters of petrol in the diesel picasso. There was a quarter tank of desiel at the time, so I guess the ratio is around 1 part diesel to 3-4 parts petrol. I have to drain the tank tomorrow morning and so on, hopefully its not banjaxed. Any ideas for using 40 odd litters of contaminated petrol? Is there anything that will run on that mix without damage? Push-mower maybe? Would it be dangerous to add it to a heating oil tank? If it comes down to it will have to bring it to the recycling and I suppose ad it to the "used oil" skip, but seems a shame to waste it.

Tell me about it, those disposable masks should be banned, they're complete rubbish. I have always used 3M half-masks because thats whats available near me, the filters are good but expensive. At one time Dad had a mask called a North Mask I think, it was excellent - a simple plastic armature with silicone seals, which opened to allow the insertion of the disposable paper masks then closed and clamped tight - excellent seal, very lightweight and cheap filters. Wish it was still around.

Are you using a press drill or drilling by hand?

The diesel I used was a relic, its true. Sure there are good ones around. I suppose its different strokes - Im a lightweight kind of operator, small van = lightweight gear, maybe less productivity and less money at the end of the day, buy lower overheads as well. All about finding the optimum....

Welcome to the forum Carl. Catch your boss when he's in good form and just say that you'd like his thoughts on something and broach the subject humbly. Stress that you want to improve, don't imply you are "not being given the opportunity" - make it about you not them.

The only diesel chipper I've used was a horrible stinking thing. Worse that you're exerting and breathing heavily, would find myself holding my breath around it, not nice. Had a go on a petrol one, was lovely to use, just needed a bit more hand processing of the brash. Great thing was that two guys could also manhandle it on flat ground.

Suppose at the end of the day its about community involvement. If the community doesn't value its environment and assume castodianship of it, there's nothing you can do, except go Big Brother and put cameras everywhere, which nobody wants and doesn't work either.
