No, I came late to the game (31) so once I felt I had learnt enough I started my own thing, I had no time to waste. Had I started 10 years earlier I might have had a more rounded ‘apprenticeship’ Course in those days, before the internet, you operated in a bubble, seeing little apart from what you’d learnt from your first boss, at least for me. Things like articulated loaders, crane work and SRT were things you occasionally heard about but you had no idea of how it actually happened. First time I saw an Avant was on here, I think it was Dean Lofthouse’s, as soon as I saw it it blew my mind.

A guy called Derry Watkins from Faygate near Horsham. He was one of many ex employees of Southern Tree Surgeons who, in the 70s and 80s were very prominent in the industry. Bought by Bartletts I understand.

In Dulwich College grounds?

I recall many years ago we were trimming some trees in the grounds of Dulwich College. A guy came up and wanted some wood so we stacked a few bits under the tree as he said he’d pick it up on the way back. The boss turns up and say ‘what’s that wood doing there?’ I explained that a guy was coming back to pick it up later. ’pick it up and chuck it on the wagon’ he says ‘he won’t come back and I’ll get it in the neck for leaving rubbish on site’ He was right. As the years go by he gets righter and righter, and he’s been dead for 17 years.

Iirc, you’re the bloke who suggested driving round in full PPE listening for chainsaws, then sit on your car bonnet at a short distance, waiting to be approached. You come across as a genuine idiot.

Looks like goat willow or possibly poplar. it’II burn if dry, but not very hot. Very low grade, free was a good price.

It’s all species dependent. Pollards can be pleasing to look at.

Take it out and replant. It’s not even a tree, it’s more of a shrub really. Then plant some other trees in your garden.

Oh, I’ve got mine, an 088 bought end of the last century. Mostly used for photo ops or to impress clients. This cedar was the only job I can think of in a very long time where it was really justified. Still, I’m sure my nephew will appreciate it in a few years.

I know you did old growth in Alaska or somewhere like that. I have noticed on the vids and general nonsense on the net, that certain saws like husky 288/290 and the Stihl 066/661 seem to hit a real sweet spot in terms of being able to carry them all day to multiple trees, but still have enough power to run a big bar through softwood. How many were you doing in a day? Using an 88 all day in difficult terrain, bit of a workout?

As it stands, I have no pulling in of the fingers, so it’s just a lump, been there more than 20 years iirc. I had just thought it was a callous till you talked about it.
