  1. Wow, that’s an interesting story, qualified medical doctor!
  2. Had the flu when I was a kid, never since. Sounds horrific.
  3. I have both, I can’t tell the difference (cutting wise)if I’m honest.
  4. July ‘95. Yeah, take your point, half a story. Worked for a couple of firms, mostly driving into London. Started up on my own around the Horsham area, then in 2005 moved out here with my now wife. We have just bought another house near Royan, so looks like we’re here for a while.
  5. Similar to many, buggered up my education through poor behaviour. Drifted in and out of employment, hating everything, joined a lot of my mates in sales, had a bad car crash and lost my licence, unemployed again, started mowing lawns, got a job with a landscaper who did a few trees, I thought that looked good. Saved my money and booked the 10 weeker at Merrist Wood..
  6. I suppose what always strikes me about these threads is how often people end up doing this job more as kind of accident. Doing this that and the other till they see a guy climbing around and think, ‘that looks good, I’ll have a go at that!’ Also how many did poorly or worse at school. (Edit. Easter leaver at 16 not a single exam passed in case you were wondering)
  7. Back problems can gnaw away at you, everything is an effort, till it is affecting your life in ways you don’t realise. Snapping at family and clients etc. I suffered on and off for 30 odd years, a few years ago I’d had enough, so I did what you should do, take action. Go to experts, some will tell you it’s this or that and they’ll be wrong, go to other experts, don't accept that you’ll have to grin and bear it. It can be a boring exercise, waiting for appointments and taking treatments that you know aren’t working just to eliminate it. But you have to do it.
  8. Found a photo of the job, I felled the spar towards the camera. There was a sewer pipe just below the surface, garden started filling with turds and tampons, had to get a honey wagon out and fix it immediately.
  9. Did similar, cracked a 14 inch diameter sewer in Woking, cost my insurance 5k.
  10. Doing leylandii hedge reductions. The money can be good but it’s horrible work, yesterday I hit the metaphorical wall. I was tired after two hard days elsewhere and turned up at this job thinking “get a good start here and you’ll be ok” so the rain continued and with wet gear moving from tree to tree was like wading through treacle, I tried to convince myself it was doable (and it was, on a dry day if I was fresh and 10 years younger) But at 1pm I called time on it, back Monday and it’ll be a breeze I hope.
  11. Tree’s an eyesore as it is, cut it back to the boundary, shitty over aged macrocarpa. I would suggest @Mark Bolam that any bellendery in this case is definitely on the part of the tree owner rather than the potential client.
  12. That’s a one armed pull up there!
  13. Advice...osteopathy. If the first one doesn’t solve it go to another. And as much as you might not want to hear it cos of endorphins etc. it may be time to rethink all the recreational lifting.
  14. Being awkward is the goal of some people, often these tree disputes are the latest in a long line of grievances between the two parties. Most of us on here could fill a book with stories of neighbours arguing over the work. When I was just starting in this game we were taking down a HC and the neighbour came up with some gripe or other, my old boss gave them pretty short shrift, I was rather shocked and asked why he couldn’t be a little more conciliatory. He said “I’ve been hearing this shit for over 40 years, I’m not interested in anything they have to say” I now know exactly what he meant, if it’s legal and the client is paying it’s getting done. @Gary Prentice I would just tell the guy who’s house keeps getting hit to pay for the mewp and have done with it.
  15. With neighbours it’s best to fall out as soon as possible, save embarrassment later on.
  16. Depends how much of a pain in the arse they are likely to be, if you reckon you could do it off ladders without going on their property and they’re awkward sorts, get on with it without telling them.
  17. Why is the client a bell end? If he doesn’t want the branches over his property, fair enough.
