    I would describe that as a retrenchment. Almost certainly a dead top.

    Looks to me like it’s on its way home, the reduction was probably OK’ed by the council as a way of rendering it safer and managing the decline, provide habitat etc. Just let it do it’s thing, could be decades (or a lot less) before you have to pull the trigger.

    Judging by my battery saws, that looks normal. They don’t seem to oil much, make sure the hole in the bar is clear.

    You can throw good money after bad, it’s a 20 year old saw. You could have it rebuilt from top to bottom spending half the price of a new one and have it blow 2 weeks later.

    I’d disagree with Nepia, walnuts cope well with some pretty rigorous pruning. They only bleed in the spring/late winter when the sap is rising.

    That fork is problematic and looks likely to fail at some point. Leave the water in the crack, fungus can’t attack damaged wood underwater. I can’t comment on the cabling cos I can’t really make it out. If you’re dead set on keeping the tree, I’d advise a significant reduction. Others my differ.
