1. Very happy burning Scots and leylandi myself. I like some softwood in my logshed - easier to get going than hardwood and faster heat, so useful to have in the mix. I find leylandi is a good heavy log for softwood and I'd prefer it to some hardwoods like willow, horse chestnut and pop. Just need to season for a couple of years at least and log and split after seasoning so you avoid the resin.
2. Bottling things up is a really bad idea - the more you bottle up the bigger the pop in the end.
3. Yep, you've got your sense of humour Eggs and you're also honest. Saying 'I'm suffering from depression' isn't too easy for many people. Thats a good first step.
4. Good to hear your not experiencing anything as bad as my Dad mate. Strangely it wasn't really grim - I had a tough Mum who helped him through the really bad episodes and kept us out of the way, so we didn't know too much until we were older. Hope you soon find a way to get the old mojo back!
5. I'm 5' 11 and 13st - all the weights on my gut though! I reckon that'll fit me then. Cheers Timon
6. Sorry to hear that Eggs. I've not suffered myself but it runs in the family. I grew up with my Dad having problems over many years. Us kids would be watching TV in the front room while he was throwing plates against the walls in the kitchen. That was because he bottled all his worries up and wouldn't talk. Talking helps.
7. Sad that the total is down but still some great prizes and good fun. I've taken part the last three draws but this is the first time I've won anything. Many thanks for organising it Steve. I don't have loads of spare cash with three small kids but I'll try and buy a few more tickets next year. All the best
8. Just having a look at that Timon. The Aldi website says slim fit - I haven't got a slim fit kinda body. How tight fitting is it?
9. Hey, I won a prize! Happy days. Shame to hear the total raised is down on previous years - why was that Steve?
10.
Hello Pipmac, I'm interested in your froes - are you still making them? I'd be keen to buy one. Thanks

11. I'm looking forward to seeing him try to grab Angel Merkel by the pussy - not sure thats the done thing on state visits
12. I used some Onduline sheets I had left I've from a shed roof. You can just bang nails through into your logs. Works well. Costs about £18 a sheet.
13. I've got a pretty similar problem Paul, so I'm thinking about signs myself. I've just started pruning and clearing brash, etc. I'm getting ready to fell some Leylandi. Anyway three kids came along on Saturday and, when they saw me working, asked if it was private property. I said that it was. They then asked if they could make a den, so I said fine, go ahead. Out of interest I rang the solicitor who said I'd be liable for any accidents should anything happen and they decide to sue. He advised insurance. I've found a couple of companies that do specialist ibsurance for woodland. It looks like £150 - £180. Seems reasonable to me for peace of mind, so thats what I'm going to do. He also said to put up some signs saying private property.
14. I just bought myself a Cutting Edge Trojan 330mm. Originally I was going to get a Silky but I read on here somewhere that the Trojan was cheaper and just as good. I did 3 hours with it on Sunday, trimming all the lower branches off some overgrown leylandi. Lots of tiny branches that I didn't fancy bothering to try to cut with the chainsaw. Worked well, cut easily - I like it.
15. I stack mine like this too - but to stop stacks becoming unstable I put long logs in at regular intervals to tie the front of the stack to the back. So if you have three rows of 12" logs you put in a 36" log every now and again.
16. Thanks dervishcarving and se7enthdevil, The elm is all deadstanding, so will be dry or drying. Very interesting that all wood is potentially good for turning - we'll have a play then se7enthdevil - I'll have to measure the hazel for you. As a complete guess I'd say at least 8 inches diameter. Its not been coppiced in years and years and is at the point of falling over under its own weight.
17. A mate of mine has just got into wood turning and he's offered to help me in the wood in exchange for some timber. Sounds a good deal to me As a start we cut up a very old, heavily burred tree that blew down a few weeks back. It was part of the remains of an old hedgerow and my best guess is that it was a field maple, but I'm no expert. Anyone have any thoughts on that? Also what other wood is good for turning? I have dead elm, overgrown hazel, and leylandi that all need felling/coppicing. I also have lots of poplar, but I assume thats useless? On my woodpile I also have some cherry and ash of a good size. Are they good for turning? Any thoughts or advice much appreciated.
18. Sounds great - sadly I'm not near you but if you ever want to do something in Norfolk I could help
19. I had some Onduline corrugated bitumen sheets left over from doing my log store roof. I have those on top of a stack. You can put screws through them and into the logs.
20. I wonder if its good for all trees?
21. Thats what I usually do. Then I use the compost in the garden. I hadn't thought of taking the ash back to the woodland before though.
22. Good point about Spring application Goaty. I think I need to get hold of some big tubs with lids that I can store it all in.
