  1. When people are addicted to your product you can jack up the prices as much as you want and they'll still be buying.
  2. I used to work in WH Smith, the amount of people who are addicted to the lottery is quite depressing. It would not be unusual to see someone spending £50 a week on tickets. Scratchcards are just as bad, if not worse.
  3. Not that i'd recommend buying an annuity.
  4. My incredibly rough estimate would be that you'd need a pot of around £300,000 to £320,000 if you're planning on buying a £20,000 annuity without a spouse's income after your death.
  5. I spent eighteenth months working for a pensions administration company, and the amount of people who would ring up complaining that their £5,000 per annum pension was "not enough" was quite surprising. IMO current "investment" style pensions (the ones not linked to your salary and service) aren't worth jack. I'll be looking at getting a few buy-to-lets instead.
  6. Seal the bolts with Loctite mate
  7. Could you just rope knife the end (and get a strop) have the end labelled and stuff then re-spliced?
  8. Pretty sure lichen is a good thing. If you ever go down to Land's End in Kernow you'll see how lichen covers most of the rock there! It's a sign of very clean air.
  9. How close to an end of the rope is the damage?
  10. I used to do a few turbo ciders now and then. Made a nice wheat beer once, with honey rather than sugar.
  11. My boss has A New Tree Biology also by Shigo and he rates it very highly. It gets a bit philosophical in places though apparently. Not that that's a major criticism.
  12. Just picked a copy up on Amazon for £45 delivered. Looking forward to it
  13. Here's to another five years of the failed austerity experiment by a morally bankrupt party. Where the richest people in a rich country make case to convince the "average" person that the country is poor and that it's the fault of the poorest/most vulnerable people. Rather than bother to counter corporate tax avoidance they'll instead cut welfare by a further £12bn a year and continue to chip away at the people who have the least. NHS stealth privatization will continue with lucrative NHS contracts given to Tory donors amongst so much more. Today I voted for the second time and lost a lot of faith in not only the electoral system but a lot of AT members too.
  14. Yes, but you also don't make the poor richer by making the rich richer either.
  15. I smell a rat....... Tesco makes a £1billion trading profit but reports a huge loss. Strangely this is just after a new CEO takes over which allows him to rubbish the old guard, pay a much reduced dividend and no doubt land a huge bonus when he miraculously returns them to profit next year. The City knows this as Tesco shares barely moved yet its all over the news like nobody saw it coming.
  16. Hi In the not too distant future I will be looking to travel and work in Australia. I would like to know if there are any employers on ArbTalk who would be happy sponsoring someone with the below qualifications. I'm a 22 year old male non-smoker who's in good health. I am passionate about what I do and work hard for my pay. You should be aware that I have worked in rural Queensland previously and I am therefore not eligible for another working holiday visa. Currently not too fussed on location. I would rather be away from big cities (country boy at heart) but will consider anything. I will have eighteen months experience on the ground and I am a competent 2nd/rescue climber always looking to improve his skills as a climbing arborist; RFS Cert. Arb Lvl 2 Arb Diploma CS 30, 31, 38, 39, Woodchipper, First Aid, Manual Handling Full UK clean driving licence Having previously lived and worked in Australia I've already experienced the culture change and the hot weather so know what to expect. I look forward to hearing from you and thanks for reading this far! Cheers, Dan

  18. Nice one, been wanting to do this for a while!
  19. My apprentice contract was based on 40 hours a week 8-4 Monday to Friday with pay and a half for every hour over 40. Breaks paid at normal rate.
  20. So he's paid up? As angry as you are (and rightly so) don't do it. Never having dealt with your situation before I would suggest the small claims court route, best to keep your nose/reputation clean. Cheers, Dan
  21. They look good, Steve. I've got my 31 next week so I'll probably end up making something similar.
