  1. A guy I regularly work for bought an agricultural bale trailer and built a really nice shepherd hut off it. Towed it with the Valtra from the barn it was constructed in to its present location in the woods. No planning needed, solar powered, woodburner, cherry wood kitchen, with a very nice fire pit/brazier outside.
  2. But how will they deal with high altitude, shallow soil, cold Winter and incessant rainfall of the Highlands compared to Sitka?
  3. Where about a in Lancashire?
  4. The growth rate on these Eucalyptus is incredible, certainly here in the South East, don’t think they will be outperforming Sitka in the Highlands anytime soon though! I can see the benefit of planting them for firewood/biomass production for personal or large estates etc. But for me, the downside is that there is little to no biodiversity/ecological benefit, they are a potential powder keg in prolonged dry weather, RE: Portugal’s internal inferno a couple of years back, Spain removing the vast amounts of Eucalyptus presently and replanting with a different genus. Tilhill are currently doing trials in Wales with Eucalyptus. So, big return, in quick time with minimal beat up/maintenance costs, all machine processed, the majority straight to biomass. right up Tilhill’s street. Eucalyptus has its place, but as a large scale alternative to Sitka et al, I couldn’t think of anything worse.
  5. I was in the garden with my daughter this morning when this landed on her hand. I have never seen anything quit like it before. Not much bigger than a mosquito and with fluff covering its body, anyone?
  6. One of the best UK firewood species.
  7. The quality of the steel means they are more rigid and they are very durable, very little guidebar dressing required, easily worth the extra money.
  8. I am loving the time at home, especially with the weather being so good for so long. I have done most jobs around the outside of the house, things I have put off for ten years, including a new workshop milled from Larch I felled last year.I have had a couple of jobs that I couldn’t avoid and the sound of the alarm clock pissed me off, I will be back nose to the grindstone soon enough so I am no rush to get back, not so much fun if your up to your neck in debt I suppose.
  9. The Government are now just adjusting the lockdown rules to parallel what the public are already doing so they look like they are still dictating the rules and are in charge of the situation, they are not.
  10. If it makes women turn out like Seven of Nine, count me in. In the meantime I will settle for a drop of this.
  11. Just check out the super high tech Honda robot that walks about like it has shit itself, that should easily confirm that machines are not quite there yet.
  12. Try Powell Forestry, they are Hampshire based, you don’t ask, you don’t get.
  13. Well it will certainly be failing. The difference in movement and people on the street in groups near me compared with last week is huge. My next door neighbour is currently preparing for a family garden party (16th Birthday) and 95,000 plus international travel passengers have arrived in the UK since the so called lock down. Herd immunity it is then.
  14. A break is exactly one minute shorter than the legal parking time limit on a motorway service station before you have to pay or get fined.
  15. The difference is that some of the UK fishing quota was sold by brokers on the open market. I think the UK is the only EU country to offer their quota for sale. You can’t complain about Dutch, French and Spanish trawlers working our waters when they have paid for the right to do so surely? I would like to think that the UK leaving the EU should call a halt to discard from British boats at least.
  16. The bud formation is definitely an Acer, still think it is Sycamore.
  17. Definitely Sycamore, they are in full leaf here in Sussex, maybe just a bit behind.
  18. The EA had no business on site so I assume it was stolen and was being ‘collected’ by the Jimny. The EA where informed as well as the fuzz, and some large concrete blocks where placed either side of it until they arrived.
  19. It belonged to the Environment Agency, it was in the woods where I was cutting some Chestnut. Some scrotes in a green Jimny backed in through the gate to hitch it up and got told to do one.
  20. I know the sea defence company near me use Green Heart for groins and Purple Heart for the steps down to the beach. All of it is positioned and installed with 360’s, really big beams, really heavy stuff.
  21. It all depends on the size and quality of the timber, and how well it is cut. Any photos?
  22. It’s was 12” long at 7” x 3”. It’s being used as a fireplace surround.
  23. I bought a bundle of reclaimed pitch pine beams a while back. One beam is different and was clearly mixed up at the yard, it is heavy, hard and barely floats. This is a picture of the end grain, any ideas?
