  1. You need to do a step cut free fall, step cut hand held, sink cut free fall, sink cut hand held and finish off with a Pruning cut, all in timber if approx 4”. You do a minimum of two of each to show an acceptable version, up to a maximum of six.
  2. Are you aware of the current guidelines with the two rope working system? You will be expected to complete your assessment on two ropes. I would say the main failure points would be poor cuts/no hinge, cutting in a dangerous work position/saw too close to the body/body in kickback zone, not using chain brake, cutting one handed, visor /ear defenders up whilst cutting etc. Edit: Your climbing kit must be fully compliant with LOLER and you need to be able to show proof.
  3. Wether it is more harmful than seasonal flu, which kills thousands in the UK each year, will be hard to prove as the UK data is so poor. It certainly has created mass hysteria on a scale not seen since the Witch Trials.
  4. When this all kicked off, the lockdown held firm for the most part in my area, people where happy to do it and see how things panned out, confirmed cases still are some of the lowest in the Country. But as the cracks started to appear in the guidelines and the data is simply started to be bollocks, I now firmly believe that this is the largest hoax ever played in the UK population.
  5. Had no issues at all with mine, hammered it straight off the shelf.
  6. Sounds like the perfect description of a Husqvarna 550xp, a 16” on a 80cc saw, I can’t see that being well balanced at all.
  7. I have worked alongside a few women who have bought Arbortec women fit and gone to men’s trousers later as they fitted them better, it all depends on your body shape really. Go to someone like Honey Brothers or FR Jones and they will have loads of brands and sizes, try them on and choose. Husqvarna Technical Extremes are what I wear, long leg and adjustable waist for skinny buggers.
  8. When I studied in Newport, where this hospital is located, one of the first things my Welsh mate stressed was that If I was ever very sick or had a bad injury, whatever it takes “get the first train back into England”, don’t go to the Royal Gwent.
  9. They ring bark them to prevent the the spread of the disease down through the root system into the neighbouring trees.
  10. You can hit it hard but you will get a load of water shoots. If you cut these out as they develop and create a manageable framework, it should be good to retain and not produce overwhelming fruit, if you don’t manage them you will be back to square one in a few seasons.
  11. I was watching The Fall in Brighton, a charity event and a bring your own booze night. Spent the entire evening chatting to Frank Skinner, very funny and nice guy, I was repeatedly offering him booze from my large bag of Innes & Gunn hoard which he repeatedly declined. Woke up in the morning and the first thing that popped into my head was remembering that Frank Skinner is a recovering alcoholic and that I didn’t sing Three Lions at any point.
  12. I would double check against Indian Horse Chestnut. It looks quite similar to Yellow Buckeye but the Buckeye has got serrated leaf edges like Hornbeam.
  13. There is a very simple gadget on YouTube/eBay from Oz, but pricey for what it is though.
  14. I am looking for a chainsaw mortiser to make Sweet Chestnut post and rail fencing. They seem to have disappeared from most of the usual outlets, does anyone know of someone still supplying them or have one that is surplus to requirements? I am not looking for a chain mortiser, I am looking for the type with a frame to hold the post and the guide bar attachment on the saw to do the mortises. Thanks in advance.
  15. I discussed it with another cutter who confirmed that it was present in his woodland near Maidstone for the first time this year.
  16. It depends if your dealer is over 40.
  17. The National Yew collection is at Bedgebury Pinetum in Kent, I add new specimens to it every now and again. The drug they developed is called ‘Taxol’, for use in people with heart conditions, not sure if it is still widely used or has been superseded.
  18. Laburnum does have similar colour to the heartwood but the bark is smoother, it’s Robinia.
  19. Robinia pseudoacacia (Black Locust) fantastic firewood, durable in the ground and turns well with good heartwood colours.
  20. I know exactly what I am talking about, it seems there is only me that does in this conversation.
  21. I don’t know what you are talking about? I have worked in Forestry for 26 years, in that time I have observed most of the experienced older guys retiring or going into machine work. There are very few younger people coming through to replace them, that’s maybe why the OP has looked elsewhere for staff.
  22. It’s the big players in the Industry that control the timber market Stubby, as well you know. You can’t pay more than the timber is currently worth to cut and extract.
  23. So what’s your answer to the shortage of young Forestry hand cutters who want to train the Forestry units to get into Arb instead, I am all ears.
  24. I am not surprised that the OP has looked elsewhere to fill a role. The amount of experienced Foresters that have left the industry since harvesters took over a large volume of cutting work has not been replaced by the younger generation. There is a massive shortage of good young cutters in Forestry, everyone wants to go into Arb.
