  3. I agreee 18 months should be ok especially if the oak is split into thinner logs to increase surface to volume ratio, but out of interest you could also get a moisture meter to check the logs % moisture to know for sure. Makita ea6100 ? Shame they are not making them anymore. How much does firewood cost per 1m3? I use a polytunnel as a wood shed so if you do have the space ideal for an extra wood shed.....

  7. Test a log when its delivered before its unloaded would be best I don't buy seasoned logs too expensive for me, but many people I know or worked for have and it seems it as often as not the logs are unseasoned. The stuff wooden in crates normally is seasoned ok, most packed that way comes imported from eastern europe or the baltic states etc I think, as im not sure that style of crates are packed from UK sourced wood? Im not sure its all ethically or legally sourced though as alot of illegal tree felling going on in some countries. Better imo to try get logs from the UK as normally is cheaper than the crates, but normally will come loose or in dumpy bags which I suppose might be more hassle to store....

  10. Kiln drying is used as marketing hype for naive customers as the method thats being used for the wood drying gives zero advantage to you. Wood kept in a garage or wood store in winter will reabsorb moisture from the air & be back up to near 20%. Unless its stored in the house with central heating on it will not stay at 15%. So any kiln dry marketing etc which usually means more expensive logs , will be a worthless extra expense. Buy yourself a cheap £20 moisture meter & don't bother about drying methods just try & buy wood thats under 20%. You need to spilt one log and test the middle. As alot of wood sold as kiln dried or air seasoned often isn't fully seassoned in reality - buyer beware.

  20. I think it two different species of trees. The strawb tree may well survive doesn't look completely ring barked but the the outer bark layer is damaged etc. The other tree looks like a bay tree perhaps but the pics are bad so its hard to say? The type of bark on the strawberry tree looks like it could heal better than some other tree species that have bark that peels off completely down the the cambium in one layer. Moss & lichen etc on trees bark etc are best left alone. Had a few similar cases were people often think its harming there trees in some way. One bloke who spent days every yr with a scrubbing brush cleaning lichen off an orchard of apples trees. There is is some old fashioned traditional idea to "winter wash" fruit trees to supposedly control aphids/pests. But I have come across people cleaning all kinds of other rdm garden trees. but not with pressure washers but with with a scrubbing brushes & bleach etc... 🤨

  24. I always though one would be ideal for that conservation kind of usage , especially for overstood hazel coppice etc. I know some charities have got charcoal kilns but they never seem to get used. As hazel is fairly uniform it could be quite efficent. Coservation coppice cutting overstood hazel to waste just seems wrong. It amused me once when some volunteers had a camp fire with kelly kettles etc and the wood they used was birch bought from a garage & imported from latvia. Nearby a big stack of cut hazel left to waste Often transport to roadside is also not easy though.
