  1. Schoffel gillets are well overpriced.
  2. Obsessive Tidiness Disorder or: How we can learn to stop worrying and love nature’s messiness WWW.DOUGLASBOYES.CO.UK Why do we do it? It consumes countless hours of our lives. It must cost millions. Every hedge neatly trimmed, every verge...
  3. Remembering Mike Burrows (1943-2022): “the world’s greatest bicycle designer” WWW.DESIGNWEEK.CO.UK The life and work of a maverick bicycle designer best-known for one moment in a prolific and influential career. Giant are a innovative company esp the stuff they did with Mike Burrows. Always thought there bikes are decent.
  4. Excellent is stretching it abit ?
  5. This is my thinking more common sense. Seems to me people hate leaving piles to rot down as it look untidy but I can't see what the problem is with it.. Ever do anything with air curtain buners? The cost involved in processsing & transporting tonnes of material many miles offsite to then pay for it to be disposed of at a official recycling centre seems abit mad. The local one has several huge mountains of & what looks like mainly blackthorn scrub unchipped in there yard atm. If not allowed onsite why not have an agreement with an adjacent farmer to use there land. They spread bought fert on the pastureland surrounding the sites. Heath was created & maintained in the first place since the stone age mostly just by grazing animals.
  6. No rollermatic bar nose and no fancy fuel caps versus the old ms171 one saved a few pennys? Better antivibe but more weight has & alot bigger fuel tank.
  7. Cheap £144 STIHL MS162 12" Petrol Chainsaw WWW.WORLDOFPOWER.CO.UK Stihl MS162 Chain Saw 12" Built to replace the infamous Stihl MS170, the MS162 chainsaw comes with an improved...
  8. Are you allowed to burn on site etc? Here the Wild life Trusts policy is to remove all bigger stuff cut off site...or they are burning a small amount on tin sheets then removing the ash. They also have controlled fires to burn off the heather.
  9. Yeah dog poo & wee apparently is bad for enriching grasslands to much having a negative effect on wild flora.
  10. Half the world is carrying that on the back seat of a small moped.
  11. Im all for light weight folding tyres rather than the rigid wire bead ones a new bike often comes with makes a big difference. It used to be thought that narrow 23mm pumped up to over 100 psi tyres were best and that was normal for road bikes. But more recently people have realized wider tyres aren't really slower its tyre supleness high TPI (thread per inch), thats more important. Continental GP 4000 28mm are very popular choice. They can do over 6000 miles before going bald. Wider tyres say in 32mm -40mm are very nice esp on rough back roads. GravelKing Slick TLC Folding Tyre WWW.PANARACER.CO.UK The GravelKing Slick TLC is for cyclists looking to expand their cycling horizons. Need a fast tyre with a bit more bulk for... The lower lower psi & bigger air volume absorbs more road buzz. Thats a big plus for gravel bikes as they have more clearance on the frame for the wide tyres & fitting mudguards. Also more gravel frames come with the bolts to fit a pannier rack . The lower lower psi & bigger air volume absorbs more road buzz. Thoose giants look ok & decent spec. One thing poor are the wired tyres but easy to swap. Also I dunno much about the pro wheel crankset & bottom bracket spec & durability. Cheap press fit bottom brackets on modern bikes can cause alot of issues. Some brands have gone back to the more durable threaded BSA (Birmingham Small Arms 🙂) bottom brackets. I prefer drops bars as I find it nice to have the choice of hand postions esp when theres a headwind and also the shifters on drop bars seem more ergonomic to me.
  12. Yeah thoose brands are good. Also Ribble cycles is good. Trek and Specialized etc are overpriced.
  13. I did a 250 mile ride in a day in demin shorts & t shirt & normal trainers was an audax ride Home| Audax UK - The Long Distance Cyclists' Association WWW.AUDAX.UK Audax UK long distance cycling home page All the gear might give very marginal speeds gains though but isn't needed. I don't mind the idea of a hybrid but they all are designed using very poor quality parts unless you go for the very expensive ones Cheap heavy frames & poor quality groupsets etc make a bike that feels unpleasant to ride. Road bikes tend to be better vfm. Also id look a gravel bikes like the one Big J has. Gravel bikes are like the modern trendy version of the old cycle touring bikes like that dawes galaxy.
  14. My ideal bike: Jan’s Bike After Paris-Brest-Paris – Rene Herse Cycles WWW.RENEHERSECYCLES.COM If you've read the previous post, you know that this year's Paris-Brest-Paris wasn't without challenges. It was a hard... Good for country lanes with poor tarmac as wide fast rolling high TPI tyres plus mudguards. No disc brakes or STI gear shifters levers to go wrong & add extra weight & complexity for no benefit for everyday usage. So not any hassle with maintenance.
  15. Some new bikes only come in Small Meduim Large as they decided to save money by having fewer frame sizes, adjutment is achived by seat post and handlebar stem length. For your height if your inseam is about 30" -31" id say you want a max 53cm frame size id you are measuring it like a classic road bike from Bottom bracket to bottom of the seat tube How to Measure a Road Bike Frame? Find Your Size in Seconds WWW.EBICYCLES.COM Whether you’re riding a road bike to join a local cycling group, do a casual weekend ride, or test your limits in a race, your... What size is you sons bike? & whats the budget as decent ones aren't cheap unless you find a bargin second hand but aren't many about. New hybrid flat bar bikes are nearly all total junk.
  16. FC has a pdf on winching. https://cdn.forestresearch.gov.uk/2004/01/fctg001.pdf There seems to be an endless number of different brands of tirfor clones at various prices ive no idea about quality v tirfor , but have used a few clones that seemed ok. The cheap ACE ones, is the brand realted to this company thats based in Scotland? Alfred Cheyne Engineering Ltd Probaby not related....?
  17. Harwoods logs only no chip or softwood what a fussy bugger You'll be asking for the Moon on Stick next Try being less fussy & maybe even offer some money you might get more luck.
  18. No liquid feed but slate & plastic under trees is a bad idea imo & best removed and replaced with soil/bark. I dislike the trend for gravel with plastic membranes in gardens at all, as they are high maintenance & generally look rubbish imo. Maybe its ubiquitousness is something related to thoose garden transformation telly programs? Gardens are much better in most cases either with pavers or soil than plastic membranes scattered with gravel or esp slate all over the place. Not must better than astro turf.
  19. I think leylandi is better.
  20. Id say choose hornbeam instead & your plan may create a sump for water, & make a berm to plant into How to Plant based on Soil Drainage | Sierra Azul SIERRAAZUL.COM Looks like a new build might be turf layed over subsoil & topsoil missing or some other messed up things.
  21. Its not the bramley that need 2 its the other apple tree if you only have 2 trees total that may need a polinator as is won't get polinated by the bramleys as the pollen is sterile Triploid apple trees in simple language GARDENFOCUSED.CO.UK Triploid apple trees explained for the amatuer gardener from GardenFocused.co.uk. How to pollinate them with helpful... Crab apples are self fertile so are ok on there own.
  22. So does being an SSSI mean you may have to do stuff thats enforced? Say they tell you or recommend you to do something impratical and expense and you don't do anything what happens then? Looking here all the enforcment actions are from doing something wrong none cover not doing something recommended apart from the controling injurious weeds ones? https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/63ef6fdee90e077bb3d7af0d/annual-enforcement-report-2018-to-2022.pdf Makes sense a stressed plant form either drought ot water logging is weaker. Waterlogging also makes apple canker worse etc. I had the idea any extremes nationally or regionally in climate either drought/or very wet winters would probably acelerate ADB.
