  1. Snarling badger ....... I think it is illegal for a company to make an employee pay for damage caused as described......... if YOU have an accident the company claims on THEIR insurance , but YOUR name will be on the accident report form , when YOU apply for your own personal vehicle insurance you will be asked " have you had any accidents ,claims or convictions in the last year ? " You should declare it , IF not and you have to claim yourself at a later date you could be guilty of false declaration and payout and insurance refused !!
  2. No just a buttress flare taken off .....
  3. New ms 880 lost it's virginity today !!!
  4. Yes thats fine .........here;s another in Oak , this was wet / green when turned and much thinner walls , it warped a lot in a pleasing ( to some )organic way . I would like an in tact squirrel skeleton to put inside one of them ha ha !!
  5. I have just found and resurrected this thread to show something I have recently made and it appears to be the correct thread for the following ............ I do a fair bit of arty / farty woodwork ( mostly turning ) and like unusual pieces of wood ( anything but plain sound clean wood to be honest !!) and have recently made this from a piece of beech which has become spalted but also has a cleanly compartmentalised hole running right through it , I created a ball about about 10" dia and hollowed it through 1 of the holes so the walls of the ball shape is approx 6mm thick and have made a small stand on which to display it , just thought I would show what can be made from an "interesting " piece of wood that also shows the beauty of CODIT in an unusual / interesting way
  6. Very nice ! never seen rings used as the legs / ends before , a sort of refined flintstones style !!
  7. Hi , has anyone on here ever leased land for growing of christmas trees ? if so approx what is the rate per acre per year ? and was a solicitor needed to facilitate the contract , and what terms and conditions might be a problem and what is the spec for final re- instatement at end of term ( if not continued ) any info would be helpful , many thanks ........
  8. A few recent bowls .... 1st an Ash bowl 15" dia and wire brushed with angle grinder to give a sand blasted like surface and then treated with liming wax , interior left natural wood , 2nd is a small forked plank from a Birch ..
  9. Nice stuff slackbladder ! . .. I particularly like the coffee table , I have a few bits of wood set aside for such things but find the legs can be a bit hard to make to suit/ match / contrast the top , and the jointing work is quite time consuming ( I am no joiner !!) but the steel legs look great and are probably easier to fit ( I am no blacksmith either !!) but I know some one who could do this sort of work ....
  10. Between Newton Abbot and Totnes
  11. Insurers base premiums on risk , and older people pay less because they are safer ( premiums start to go up at 75+ ) it is not lack of skills , eyesight /hearing etc that is the problem ... it is the risk taking attitude of younger drivers that result in the big claims ...statistics prove this !!
  12. Just imagine if Scotland had voted for independence , it's fiscal plans were based on high oil prices !!
  13. We have all seen the price of petrol and diesel fall at the pumps ( good ) but has chain oil fallen by much , ( I bought in bulk when the price was high !!doh ) Also have the cost of flights , especially long haul fallen much ? if not why ... heating oil I have been told is now very cheap , so less people wanting logs ( mild weather also causing this ) Also hearing today about low prices having a big effect in Aberdeen , and problems developing in Norway as well ...... I have heard oil "experts" predicting price rises BUT did any of them predict the current situation a while back ? ...
  14. Arrived at yard this morning ( I am subby ) to find the guy I am to work for looking rather upset .... all saws 5-6 stihl ms 441 , 461 and 660 among them and an old stihl lightning , and a load of power tools taken in an overnight raid , It makes me wonder who will buy large saws ? it is not a typical householder domestic wood cutter etc ........ also unconfirmed reports of another contractor nearby also losing gear .not a nice way to start the day... I was the only one with a saw on site so had to take great care not to get it stuck !!
  15. It is not really worth a lot "roadside" , also it's firewood value is poor as it does not burn very well and large lumps are hard work to log up .....However they might just be someone who wants it for carving or a particular project .... also haulage will impact on any value it has really , always worth asking on here though and anything is better than having to cut it all up and shift it your self though ... good luck !!
  16. As tressrus said The cones on Monterey pine appear in clusters and are pretty heavy , and the combined weight close to the end of a branch does occasionally cause branch failure ..... the cones themselves stay on the tree for up to 30 years !!!.... I did a similar such job a year or 2 ago ( removing many cones ) but it is not easy removing the cones in their clusters and the end of branches where they appear !!
  17. Genuine marine ply needs no treatment it is VERY durable in outdoor situations ...OK to paint to match truck if required ...
  18. Probably the most ridiculous thing I have seen !! I would of thought most would expect to charge £500 to dismantle remove and grind stump !!!! I despair how far removed from reality some people can be ... are they politicians ?
  19. I thought perhaps you were a part time driving instructor , I would imagine it has now been responsibly recycled and not just dumped !!
  20. Spoke to a local firewood merchant today and he is not happy ...too warm ... not enough log sales ........... I have managed to work a bit recently but not enjoyable , I also have HGV licence and work for an agency on occasion but not much demand at present ... no worries though I have plenty to do
  21. Look at the rear wheels ( or lack of !!) and this was at the START of the race , then see who the sponsor / driver was !!!! pure coincidence I suspect but made me laugh though !!
  22. Foreign objects in trees are quite common in my experience .... on 1 occasion i kept hitting metal all along the fallen trunk and it turned out to be horse shoes banged in to the trunk to create steps/ handholds !! another time an ivy clad beech turned out to have a bricked up cavity ( like a small church door shape ) on one side with concrete poured behind it ! Around Slapton area which was used by the Americans in WW2 for training with live firing many trees are known to be shrapnel laden and timber merchants just are not interested in anything from that area .... unfortunately it issjust part of the job , but a real pain to keep damaging big saws !!!
  23. I am surprised you mill english timber and then use some foreign wood !? lol ... I do not know much about Iroko but one of the most resilient finishes to apply is Rustins 2 pack a kind of liquid melamine , after applying thinly , and when fully dry it will look better if you sand it back with quite fine abrasive 320 perhaps ..Try a sample piece if you have any spare first ..
  24. A couple of particularly nice hollow vessels I have done recently ....The second is from a bit of spalted beech with some burring , this is probably my favourite type of piece to do with the flared natural edge opening ( not easy but I feel it is worth the effort though !!) and the first is from the crotch of an Ash tree , which was then scorched and then sanded back through the char in the most figured areas to reveal the twisted /contorted grain , and then burnished and polished ....both are about 12-13 " tall ....
  25. Fantastic picture there Mr Humphries !! I saw some epic Sweet Chestnut pollards in Corsica once most were very ancient indeed .... I love such such specimens ..
