  1. And by the time everyone has finished messing about another contractor would have been in there done the job and sent the invoice in. The developers we work for want every site flattened period, they wont have a tree dictate the layout of any site they own. On one site in particular it was checked for tpo`s and restrictions late on a friday afternoon , we were in on the saturday and dropped 300 trees. Its a crap way of working trying to clear up a bomb site but the stakes are high with development land.. I have seen one developer spend upwards of £180,000 to re stock a garden with trees and shrubs, in fact he planted more than we took out. Bob
  2. Yes ask them why no one has made a small tracked chipper with a hydraulically driven stump grinder on the other end and a small hydraulic winch under it. Its about time an all in one tool was made. Bob

If anyone wants wood pm me your details and I will put you in the book .If you are near anything I am doing you can have first shout, the last thing I want to do is haul this stuff back to the yard. We are clearing a monster of a job near Jct 25 of the M25 at the end of the month. There is a lot of Ash and Oak in there so the same applies let me know. Bob
  4. Guildford Surrey but our work takes us all over the place. The trailer has a crane on it so the front takes sticks between 12` to 15` and the back takes 20` ish . The tipper that goes with same truck holds about 80 cubic meters if heaped up and we sell all the rings / short bits by the load for the same money. Some people prefer the tipper load. Bob
  5. I have just browsed through this thread and its become apparent I am underselling timber from our forestry and land clearance work. Its not suitable for a processor but they are still 30ton loads.I sell a mixed truck load of oak,ash birch or beech for about £650 delivered. I normally run out a dozen or so loads a month and I have got them screaming at me for timber. Bob
  6. The only damage I had ever seen one of these chippers was on the Mog pto driven chuck and duck. One of the lads grabbed a big hand full of twigs/crap and lobbed it in and in a split second a topper flew past him on the end of a rope, straight into the disc and all hell broke loose. That spat the blades out and stuffed the anvil, didnt do the topper much good either. Bob
  7. They are not that bad:laugh1:. The one thing they have got in their favour is the amount of fan on the chute. The chip could hit the headboard of a 40` artic trailer on an old 9" vermmer that we had, in fact you needed the easy sheet pulled over all the time to contain it. Modern chippers dont do that, you have to get in there and shovel it about. Bob
  8. This is true, as a self employed person they are still ok for use but you cant let employees use them. About 20 years ago we had a 9" pto driven chuck and duck running behind a mog, the things are evil. It would scoff as big a lump as you could launch at it and if that lump was coming off you shoulders all the brush coming past would try its best to rip your ears off:laugh1: Much faster than roller fed chippers.   10. All you need is a written work order from the client with clear instruction as to what he requires, also a brief note added to it to say that its clear of any restrictions on site. Crack on Bob
  11. This chap rightly or wrongly was given a big financial slap but its probably a 100% tax deductible legitimate expense that will paid by an offshore holding company. I read somewhere that 80% of all uk commercial property owners keep their assets offshore. So basically IR will be short of this out of his company tax returns.   12. The 4x4`s fuel comparison from what we have here in daily use. Freelanders td4 - 45 to 55 mpg landrover 90 - 28 to 35 mpg landrover 110 - 25 to 30 mpg if not driven by some of our looneys Range Rover v6 30 to 35 mpg Disco vans 300tdi - 28 to 35 mpg Ford ranger - 25 to 30 mpg Mitzy l200 18 to 25 mpg Shogun 2.8 25 to 28 mpg nissan lwb pickup 25 to 30 mpg And lastly but by far the best for a truck is the poxy old gutless vaxhaul brava at 35 to 40 mpg. I wont start on the mogs and lorrys you would have a heart attack. Bob
  13. This is bang on, I remember when folks used to down plate from 10 to 7.5. the whole truck was built slightly heavier so you end up compromising the carrying capacity. Some of these downplated trucks depending on body type could only carry 2 ton. Bob
  14. We have got quite a few of these landrovers and the mpg figures live with the drivers. We gave the old boy that drives the mulcher a 90,. We gave him the car with 40,000 miles on it. He goes along with the traffic and tucks in with the lorries on the motorways and rarely does more than 60mph. He managed to put 280,000 miles on it in 6 years and it always managed 350-400 miles out of its 12 ish gallon tank. You have to bear in mind he was loaded with all the diesel for the day, spares,hydraulic oil and tools, probably half a ton. It also never needed any mechanical components in that time not even a clutch, all it had was its service`s and a grease gun put over it. Now we turn to the 110`s the "boys" use and its sub 25mpg and a new clutch most years and the odd gearbox here and there. The tdi lump is capable of 30+ mpg as many will confirm in nearly two ton of discovery. The problems lay firmly with the drivers. One lad pulled into the workshop and insisted that one of the 110`s needed a new fuel filter because it would not go over 35mph so the fitter just did as he asked and off he went. A week later he said it was just the same so the fitter wizzed it round the block, , the **** had been driving it for nearly 2 weeks in low range. Another moron had two clutches in a 110 in a month.We assumed that the clutch that was fitted was duff till I went to site and watched him drive it. He was taking a mini tractor with flail to a scrub clearance job every day and bringing the kit back at night for security reasons. The entrance to the job was up a steep drive and he was backing the best part of 3 ton of trailer up a drive in high range against the trailer brakes ?????????? He did not know there was a reversing toggle to put in on the trailer and did not know there was a low range on the box , if I had not been there that morning it would have been clutch 3 going in it. I am going to stop here because I could write a book on this:laugh1: Land rover will give 30+mpg if driven properly and also give a really good service life but in the hands of morons ??????????? Bob
  15. That thing would be as much use as a chocolate teapot in the woods. I cant think of a use for it, its too tall,wide and heavy. As a gritter its probably the nuts but to have a monster like that with a flail on it seems like a sledgehammer to crack a walnut. Bob
  16. Gazundaboard. For laying on:) A bit of clean plywood to poke under a machine in the woods to stop you being eaten alive and soaked to death while fixing poxy forestry equipment. Bob

  18. Keruing is the norm but being a tight wad and the fact that some our kit punches holes through the boards it wont be getting that . It does not need to be seasoned or rebated just straight forward planks. Bob
  19. The deck of our low loader is fubared and we need to re plank it. The area is 40`x8` the planks can be 6" or 8" wide. They need to be 1 1/4" thick and I will need enough to cover this area plus a bit of spare for losses on the bearers. A decent hardwood or suggestions please. Preferably in the south of england. Bob
  20. The land rover has a dozen uses even when its road smoking years are over. Our 110 was finished with so we got our fabricator/welder to lengthen the chassis and mount a simon hoist on the back. while he was at it he fitted some anchors and a hyraulic winch up the back of it. The hydraulic pto has a two way spool too divert too the winch/cherrypicker. While he was at it he fitted an extendable draw bar so it can tow a chipper. I found an fd35 nissan engine on the bay of thieves and we put that in it. Its the nuts and we get no end of use out of it. A friend of mine had a beaten up old 90 and he tore the back off it and fitted a massive drum winch in it running off the pto, same thing its always in use. They recycle well:) Bob

  22. Its as clear as mud just like anything the government legislates on. I do think the loop is open enough to be workable in as much as most of us are not employed as "drivers" which the drivers cpc is aimed at. Even though its an EU directive Germany are threatening too not comply which might blow the whole thing out of the water. Time will tell. Bob
  23. Some truth in here. I deliver about four artic loads of timber a month to a little old man and his mucker. He is and has been flat out all year with his logs for a number of years now. He has a splitter and conveyor belt going straight into 1 ton bags , he has a beaten up forklift to stack and load the bags. He makes very light work of this and he has done very well out of it. He is just organized. Bob
