  1. Yes, we have some in our wood, native, doesn't seem to get above 18" dbh without gettin rotten heart, nice n clean white wood not durable (like most poplars), only milled a bit recently cos it seemed a shame to log up straight, big stick as low grade logs and also to see what it look like! I also remember when we coppiced woods for Suffolk w.life trust it suckered vigorously to the point of bein invasive.
  2. Depending on the woodland and your budget you could always consider a mini harvesting head like this! Good luck!
  3. We were thinning scots n spruce n had to stack it in neat piles of 4' lengths to rot in the wood, still was better than the owners previous method which was to fell n sned em and leave it like a giant game of dropsticks, great on the next thin in summer with 6'nettle etc!
  4. I did a woodland pig husbandry course in about 2004 near hay-on-wye and was gob smacked when the guy told me a lot of the ash they felled there was bought and taken to Cornwall (I was payin £7 t roadside at the time)
  5. £50! Not for firewood surely? We expect to get about an artic load of butts for milling, majority of the rest (150+t) logs but some nice straight poles for cleft rails and a few flatbows. Have dead hedged about six or seven blocks in the same wood, it's time consuming but enjoyable and very effective against the deer (but not so good with hares!) and we've had nightingales around for the first time in 40 odd yrs! and yes we have run short of tops on occasion
  6. What's the goin rate for standing? I've just had £5 accepted for 'derelict' (hate that use of the word!) ash/hazel coppice (70+yrs) but we hav to do proper dead hedge round it and I'm wondering if I've done the right thing!
  7. Not sure to be honest, I usually fell my own or buy and process road or ride side was £44 + VAT but just hoiked price to £55 + as one of the big kids is waving lots of cash about and hoovering up. Hence £70 delivered now sounds reasonable whereas 2 year ago I'd a choked at the thought of paying that!
  8. LOL, incoming! Oh mendi plugs beat me to it! I'd take it delivered at that, but I'm in Norfolk
  9. He sounds like a right nob! Is he actually a climber himself? Doesn't sound like it but if he is offer to groundie for him while he does it and shows you his 'superior' skills!
  10. That's a shame, just saw this and had made me consider pick up over transit again. Have you thought about selling the business on? As it seem we're missing out on a great product! John
  11. :) that's the only way to ensure webbed digits
  12. Your just impatient! (: I don't find it a problem, a motorway wouldn't make a huge difference just duel the rest of the A47 like A11 ( don't want new mor a them incomers! )
  13. The bio oil is very dark and has lumps in the dregs but is better than others, smell varies as well: last 2 we had smelled of neats foot oil and the new ones of linseed! Presume Oregon use whatever they can get cheapest
  14. I only loan tools to trusted colleague who know how to use em and make it clear if you bend it you mend it!
  15. When you die, your dog (if you have one) will mourn you. Your cat (if you have one) will eat you. Your dog will only mourn you until he realises he's stuck in the house with no food and a corpse....... then he'll eat you! Have a look at the impact that humans have on the environment. Compare that to cats. You'll find that you'd be much better shooting yourself for the worlds sake than a cat. Yup, and we're all gonna die for our arrogance! Face it people we favoured cats and dogs above wildlife by domesticating them, both canine and feline like to kill things if they get the opportunity but dogs are biddable and generally do what they're told whereas cats have a '@&£$ you' attitude and do what the @&£$ they want, which is why I like em but I have dogs because they don't kill for fun (although I sometimes wonder about my patterdale!)
  16. While I agree with most of what you said I must take offence at your aspersions that all tattooed Audi owners do wrong by trees!
  17. I like it, would like to see a self powered version, we get left loads of scattered small stacks of short cord up to 5" that are too slow to process with bigger machine and a headache to forward, have been looking at branch logger but the chunks a bit too small
  18. But would it be economical to move all that kit for 200 trees? Just interested
  19. Well I hope mine is gonna be keepin us warm like that soon
