Hi all I have been felling some nice sized western red cedar for a customer this week and they've said I can buy some of the bigger primary lengths (about 18" tip at 6m) trouble is not sure what to offer as don't have large funds and don't want to kick em in the nuts (good customers), but I don't want to see em go in the chipper for biomass either. Any advice greatly appreciated!

Had meindls for years but tried haix and they only lasted 6 months: hooks snapped and they split, so am currently trying Andrew boots I'd never heard of em but they're comfy and tuff, only criticism so sat is they seem difficult to foot lock in, might be arch very shallow or I'm just crap

Ha, brilliant that's my way of thinking, when I started arb/forestry 18yrs ago I'd to get excited at the sight of another chipper etc at work, I now seem to see at least 3 or 4 a day n I live in the sticks! havin said that I still make a good living at it and can't think of any job that could give me as much satisfaction. In spite of credit crunch etc there's still loads o work out there you just gotta go for it!:)

I'd just replaced the brake band! Dealer rang me this morning and told me cranks had seized on both saw. They asked what oil I used in mix, I have always used husky or Stihl oil as found Oregon etc left excess in carb/filter but about 3 weeks ago used mitox (same as Oregon I'm told) as couldn't get the good stuff quick enough, they said this might be cause! Their other theory was as we use a veg oil it may have seeped through the crank seal as its not as viscous as mineral oil. Finally apparently saws were due an update when plugged in, don't think it was mentioned I'd need to do this when I bought them:) I must add I'm not knocking the dealer as they've given superb service for the several yrs I've used em. Hooj grin

Hi, very interesting reading, I bought 3 550xpg in January and we've had warm start problems with them all, this thurs mine died after what felt like slight drop in compression, later same day a sub, who one of the other saws was for called me and told me his had done the same a few days earlier! When I dropped mine with the dealer they said they'd sold loads and had no problems (which doesn't tally with what users say!) although we are covered by warranty. I have to say up until now I found this the nicest saw I've used in.years just hope they last!

I also agree wih Andy and remember when I did medium/ large trees years ago that you were expected to be workin at a quicker pace therefore less chain brake use i.e. when snedding you did not need to put chain brake on while moving along as long as you keep stem between you and saw.

You should never pop the chain brake on at hi revs unless kick back etc, but if doing multiple cross cuts and you want to speed it up a bit you just GENTLY turn the saw in the kerf before engaging the brake. I'm sure someone will say this may cause excessive wear on the rails/chain but I've been doin it for 18yrs without a problem!

Unfortunately for you, in the UK anyway, sandals and socks always given the impression of a man who has given up on life. To complete this image you could always wear a onesy (over Kevlar of course)
