  1. I did a few days as a subbie. But as I didn't have any kit I wasn't making massive amounts, just killing some time during resettlement leave. It paid enough for me to get some trousers & boots (Oregon waipoua & Stein shadows) < there're probably the cheapest ppe you can as a start. Also got a silky (zubat). I then answered an ad on here and now I'm working full time, and I got put through my PTS so I can work on the railway.
  2. I did mine at Kingswood training services last year. Brilliant course, if imagine TKFs would follow a similar vein. Take a look at my 'diary' thread from the course http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=59532
  3. Alan Titchmarsh washes his. I saw it in gardeners world
  4. Heres a link that was posted in a thread last August http://www.isa-arbor.com/events/conference/proceedings/2013/CARPENTER_Caring_for_Your_Body_Arborist_News_Feb_2013.pdf Here's the thread link http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=61560
  5. Why spoil it by putting sauce on
  6. A vertical forest is nearing completion in Milan. There are two tower apartment complexes which contain a total of 400 residential units. The facade of the buildings will be covered with 730 trees, 5,000 shrubs, and 11,000 perennial plants. It is expected to have the same ecological impact as 10,000 square meters of forest
  7. I'm willing to be corrected but If your taking tools etc to and from your yards or your own use, no. As its not for reward If your arisings are logs which you deliver for reward, yes.
  8. http://www.frjonesandson.co.uk/ are based in south east London.
  9. Awesome instructors loads of people will rate them http://www.kingswoodtraining.co.uk/courses/chainsaw/combined-chainsaw-maintanance-felling-small-trees-nptc-units-cs30-cs31/
  10. Taken from http://www.hedgelayer.freeserve.co.uk/plantrim.htm I'd imagine a couple of inches of chip could replace the leaves. "The following methods were used for weed suppression and ground preparation which saved a lot of time digging and weeding. This was done in late September 2000, when we start to get our autumn rainy season. Slash the grasses and weeds back, leave them lying on the site. Add 1/2 inch one year old composted sheep manure. Cover the lot with a thick layer of flattened cardboard boxes. Cover with mulch, I used 3 inches of one year old leaf mold (crawling with soil-building insects) then covered with new leaves when they fell. Place cut branches over the site to keep things from blowing around, and to capture passing leaves. In late November, when I planted the hedge, the soil under the cardboard was friable, the weeds and grass, along with their roots were gone, and digging small pits for the plants was a dream, right through the softened cardboard, rather than trying to dig into concrete, which would have been the case, had I tried to dig into the thick roots of the grasses and weeds of late summer. By adding mulch over this in the summer 2001, I have had only a few wizened thistles to hand weed. Otherwise, the hedge plants are thriving, and grasses are held in check."
  11. Have you considered RSJs with railway sleepers. Goes up quick and reasonably sturdy.
  12. Just goes to show when it's not your turn......
  13. I'm looking to get a stein vega. It's u-create system means you can put the saw anchor point where you want. I tried one on and the pads are quite large which helps spread the load. £195.62 so it's well in budget http://www.frjonesandson.co.uk/products-page/climbing-equipment/harnesses1/arb-safety-harnesses/stein-vega-work-positioning-harness/
  14. We should all be willing to plant as much as possible. It's future work for starters, if not for us but the next gen' of Arborists
  15. Lol didn't even notice his 3 rings. Just got fed up with my bridge twisting.
  16. Think how you'd like to be treated by a tradesman / woman
  17. The 'basic kit' we used on course was: 1x hemet, 1x harness, 1x rope, 6x karabiners, 3x prussics (2 long 1 short) 1x webbing strap 1x wire core flip line, 1x set of spikes This allowed for climbing and ariel rescue. I would have a first aid kit and silky on mine too as well as add 2 extra rings to my bridge
  18. 👍 Not to mention seasickness. Why did I join the navy I couldn't get much farther from the sea. I thought about the national service bit but would you want a down and out as an oppo? However I watched (think it was) 1940s benefit. They got pittance to survive on and had work placements or lose the benefit. One 19 lad never worked since school, got £7 a week. Once on the placement he loved it and got a labouring job at £80 a day after it finished.
  19. When I did my business plan I worked into it an afternoon for kit servicing. This was added to daily costs so I didn't lose by having a afternoon tinkering.
  20. I got stein shadows (bit cheaper than the link)I was going to get wolfs but I thought I'd spend the difference on a silky. http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=43115
  21. If it's wood it'll burn. If its not wood it may still burn 🔥
  22. If haribos are aloud I might give it a go
  23. They're waiting for their chance on xfactor because the have a sob story and someone said the could sing (omitting the fact the were out of tune and key)
  24. If the English did the jobs there would be no jobs for the foreigners to have. Some are just plain lazy.
