  1. Thanks Morten, that's helpful to see those photos. How are you attaching the mini mill guide (your laminated plank) to the log? I like the way you've bracketed the ladder so that it can be screwed into the end. Cheers, Steve
  2. Have you got the 5105? I'm sure I'll get a Dolmar one day.... perhaps a much bigger saw than the 5105, a Dolmar suited for sorting out the big trees and Alaskan milling Cheers, Steve
  3. Quite a few years ago now.... I was in a factory placing thousands & thousands of mini cookies into little plastic pots running along a conveyor belt - trifles destined for a certain large Supermarket.... the guy to the left of me (who was pumping cream) got sacked for telling jokes. The guy to the right of me (who inserted a little round sponge) was an ex bank manager (he was a very nice & humble guy) and couldn't get a job (he was too old). The head gasket blew on my car before xmas and all that work became pointless! Motto: Pointless jobs are sometimes pointless; follow your heart....
  4. May have a go at that.... What's the maximum depth I need to keep in mind for the screws (before the chainsaw cuts into them).
  5. I think I understand what you're saying Rob - to down cut the side and top of the log with the same guide rail, if that's what you mean? I thought about that earlier today.
  6. Do you use spacers/ wedges underneath the cutting side of the plank to keep it ridged? Cheers, Steve
  7. Hey TCD. Are you importing those now? I couldn't wait any longer to get a Dolmar 5105 (which looks like an ace saw) so I went for a husky 550xpg. Cheers, Steve
  8. It's good to Arbtalk.
  9. Cheers Bob, I've been thinking of getting another 6ft section of aluminium feather edge so could do the leap frogging with that as well. Is there a reason people use wood for the runner instead of aluminium? (I've not done any milling yet so this is all new to me). Cheers, Steve
  10. Ordered an Alaskan Small Log Mill & the vertical Mini Mill from Rob at Chainsawbars ? chainsaw chains, chainsaw bars and chainsaw accessories ....(received very fast & with a couple of very useful freebie goody surprises!, Thanks Rob, top man!!.... and also thanks for your advice). I'm looking at making the guide runner for the vertical log mill to run along; the instructions suggest using a 4" by 6" length of wood. But I've got an aluminium plastering feather edge and wondered if anyone has tried using one instead of the wooden beam?.... should be much lighter to carry into the woods, and possibly a little smoother to push the mill across. It's not 4" wide but it does fit the width of the mill okay. Any thoughts on using the aluminium feather edge? Mines about 6ft in length. 11. Any merit in cutting a small slit to poke the front bottom edge of the L into the ground? I presume this would prevent it from lifting & leaving gaps for those pesky wabbits to sneak under. Also, where is a good place to buy the wabbit pwoof fencing from? Cheers, Steve
  12. Sorry to hear this TCD. And that's really scary to hear someone got shot - not good to hear things have escalated to that level. Surely the police should take that much more seriously?.....
  13. To me a tree is worth a lot more as a tree than firewood or furniture. Cheers, Steve
  14. Our greenest government ever.
  15. ...and thanks for that link I read that as "BT would need to give us at least some compensation to the owner of the tree." Is that right?!
  16. Hey thanks Mat, that's a great help. We'll try speaking with BT in the week, and post the results here. Cheers, Steve
  17. Yes, the trees and BT wire run along a roadside verge, small country lane. Which bit of the Telecommunications Act 1984 refers to trees? Looks like a very big document! Cheers, Steve Telecommunications Act 1984
  18. Not sure mate. Not even sure about our trees tangled in their crappy line?! Double checked and we don't have a wayleave for the BT line. So I'll be calling BT next week, from my mobile phone, and see how it goes.... I'll be calling from my mobile phone because we don't have a landline at home (didn't want to pay the expensive BT line rental!)
  19. Human beings... find something rare, panic, kill it! Oh well, it's dead now.... and it's not your fault our education system is so lacking in educating about nature. ....keep this thread in mind, try thinking a little deeper next time. Cheers, Steve
  20. Try this thread for size: http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/general-chat/69137-meindl-airstream-boot-size-small-side.html
  21. Even slack lines become taught, it's from all those gale force winds we had. Every tree is now leaning a bit more into the line.
  22. Oh okay. I'll get one of those silky pole saws and disconnect them from our woodland.... tell them to move to the opposite side of the road. Cheers
  23. Cheers, I'll check the deeds in case there's a wayleave.
  24. Some of the branches are pushing on the line quite a bit. Bit worried that the line may snap in the next batch of heavy wind.
  25. Looks like a Kates Bush.
