I'd be interested in looking at very small scale equipment demos, preferably things that are priced in the £hundreds rather than the £1000's ... things like log splitters (hydraulic & kinetic), small mini digger attachments (hydraulic thumbs, grapples, maybe even a small rotating grab, etc), small scale biochar kilns, etc. Cheers, Steve

I think the real issue here is the high cost of actually doing courses in the first place.... be it for the independent chainsaw operative or for the employer. I'd do loads more courses if I could afford to do so; equally I wouldn't expect an employer to pay for my own courses. Cheers, steve

That's exactly what I thought.... the file was hardly touching it and then I gave it some extra pressure and it felt like it was barely scratching the surface /rather than removing metal. I also forgot to mention that the bar has also shown signs of generating excessive heat (coloured the metal on the edge of the bar). Before fitting the chain the bar was well dressed & oiling as it should. cheers, steve

Plonked my first Piranha chain onto my Husky 550xpg a few days ago (15" bar). From new I wouldn't say it was cutting as aggressively as others have mentioned, certainly not much difference to the Oregon chain I had on previously. The chain does stretch a fair bit and initially needs regular tightening.... but the Oregon chain I had on previously also stretched a fair amount from new. It was cutting quite well up until the point where I buried the bar into a stone.... fortunately it was a grey shale type stone so no teeth were snapped/ but this obviously dulled the chain sharpness and I had to resort to giving it a jolly good file (about 18 strokes per tooth in this case). Then it was cutting okay.... Next day I took the depth gauges down a bit further and it was cutting a bit better. Something I did notice was that 3 of the teeth & depth gauges seemed much harder to file.... felt as if the metal was much harder. Maybe this is because I buried it into a stone??? My initial thoughts are that they are okay for the money.... However, proof of the pudding will be in the long term test and the jury is still out on that one. cheers, steve

That's great! Was working with a chap last week and he has an early 560xp... he also has the same problem with the starter mechanism breaking & I believe he uses the decompression valve but it still breaks. It was all repaired/ replaced by a main dealer (at the users expense) but the same problem keeps occurring.... so doesn't seem like Husky have bothered to come up with a stronger modification. Apparently the starter mechanism is classed as a "user replaceable/ serviceable part".... which I think is a pretty poor cop out.... yeah, fair enough for the starter cord, but not all the rest of the components! cheers, steve

Ours were in a cold frame for at least a month to stop the mice nobbling them, so it could be that gave ours a head start. We can now see another four that have come through (total of 8 now).... some may have been planted a bit deeper and haven't come through yet. If I were you I'd just wait longer, and don't make any attempt to disturb them. cheers, steve

I've black Silage sheeting is strong until it meets a sharp edge. If you are going down the plastic sheet route then it might be best to attach it to some kind of frame to keep it away from tearing on the logs.... but if you do that it would be better to use polytunnel sheet as you'll get the benefit of solar gain. cheers, steve
