  1. Factory settings are low 3/4 turn out and high 1 turn out. Even got the original stickers showing it on one of my saws lol tbh the low setting hardly ever seems to be tweaked far from that. Just remember these tillotson carbs "flood the carb" to avoid over revving which happens around 9500 rpm. You can block off the governor quite easily to get it to rev higher but remember these are torque/muscle saws and peak power is around 6500rpm.
  2. Sounds like they got the bolts muddled, should be 2 shorter ones on the underneath of the saw and 2 longer ones through the side that hold the main handle.
  3. You can use a later cylinder with a 10mm piston but not the other way around. (no to 12mm piston and 10mm cylinder) 10mm pistons and cylinders where made by mahle. I would imagine your switch has been changed at some point for an earlier one. Most things are still available and not badly priced with these saws and interchangeable with the ms440. Ive pretty much rebuilt mine totally including new plastics etc. Ive got a few spares but not crankcases or anything. The 10mm is a totally different saw to the 10mm in my eyes tbh. Bloody shame because I was offered a pair of new oe crankcases last month from a dealer closure for £30 but he sold them on ebay for not much more which is typical (they where 12mm) and would've been ideal for you... Atleast you have a good handle as they are the commonly broken.
  4. The piston ring lands are in slightly different places is the difference so will catch on the ports. Has yours got a red or black run/kill/choke switch as a rule the red ones are 10mm and black are 12mm. If you look at your serial number if its before x29382283 its 10mm or later 12mm. The strokes are exactly the same but cranks are actually different as the 12mm is much heavier so not as snappy throttle response.
  5. Just beware, depends if you have an early or later model 044 (early ones had a smaller small end/piston/wrist pin. The crankcases are different between the 2. The later one runs a bigger crank which will just about rub the inside of an early crankcase so you need to just help give it a little clearance with a dremel.
  6. Great to see and read. Seems stihl are pipping the post on this one. Seems quite a few of you like the 2 series stihls (ie 240/260 etc) Nice to see a big variation from 170's to 660's/385xp and can see where ppl have such big difference in there opinion. Ive laid miles of hedges with a trusty 170 and also get the buzz firing up the stihl 075 (111cc) tho its no lightweight.
  7. Yeah I heard that to Rich from some bloke who bought a Chinese chainsaw and also recommends using old sump oil.... mind you he said it about all of us....
  8. Possibly, but the big chrome cap on the hydraulic tank coupled up with the same colour ram still makes me think flail trimmer, of course it maybe coincidence but will almost put money on that's what the tanks off at least.
  9. Stihl p/n 0000 930 2803 its cheap enough. 3.1 mm I/d 5.7mm o/d. Got a mtr last week for about £2.50 so not worth getting aftermarket stuff at that price.
  10. Ok lets see what everyone prefers. What saw do you always seem to pick up and use and always seems to bring a smile? No doubt we will almost get a different saw for everyone. Mine would be my old 10mm Stihl 044, what it cuts like never ceases to amaze me, light enough to throw around for most jobs yet powerful enough at the same time, not to thirsty and always reach for it instead of the 372xp for some reason it just hits the sweet spot. Whats yours and brief reason why?
  11. My guess looking at the colour is its off a bamford/mcconnel flail hedge trimmer?
  12. Must be the weekend for 051 carbs, just rebuilt 3 of mine with new diaphragm kits yesterday. (ive got 3 051's and 2 075's lol. The carb model is a tillotson hs60 on these saws They are nice a simple to rebuild. I would get atleast one "full kit" tho that includes the needle etc tho as ive seen more than one go bad. As spud says they also include the welch plug, they either seem spotless or full of crud but no inbetween. There is a very clear 2 part vid on utube which will help if your in any doubt.
  13. Assuming it is a cheap Chinese version if its from a catalogue they tend not to start so easy from new. Take a look at this link below. Its shows how to start them by first pulling it over with the switch off before moving to the next level. (yes that really is meant to say off!!) S and J, einhell, b and q all tend to use the same method as all the saws are from the same factory..... Its prob wise for you to watch all the way through to ensure you've built up the saw correctly to. 14. Depends on how far in they are so to speak but also heard ppl use the end of the red wiring crimp connecters and push them on on the smaller husqys but that method needs good accessability so to speak.
  15. Rich, if its the splined adjusters like im thinking I used a bit of rubber pipe and pushed over the end (of a screwdriver) and turned them that way. Not sure if you can do it that way with a 435?
  16. Most likely a bit of blow by as the turbo oil seals are starting to go.
  17. Completely rebuilt an 051 with all new internals (1974) even managed to get a new crank! Managed to break the throttle linkage on reassembly tho right on the bend so had to order a new one online... So annoying when you get so close to the end and something like that happens... Now off to pick up an ebay special, yet another 051....
  18. 12hrs minimum everyday and 8-10 on a Saturday. Blimey Josh you even managed to draft the old man in to give you a hand I see lol.
  19. Think its a bit like hay/straw. It's most likely to combust around the 18% moisture level. Woodworks, I know what you mean, I worked out there up until Xmas just gone when I changes jobs.
  20. Sounds like my shelf of new bits that "may come in handy one day" but where bought cos they where cheap..... Lol Or the box of old carbs that one day I may need a bit off, the fact I'm more likely to go ass over tit and break my neck over it first is irrelevant hehe
  21. Yup, Big disposal place close by has caught fire 3 times in the past 4 years. Last month around 300 tonnes of it caught fire and burnt for several days . http://www.thisisdevon.co.uk/Major-recycling-plant-near-Exeter/story-17193814-detail/story.html#axzz2Trnhmg71 http://www.dsfire.gov.uk/news/newsdesk/IncidentDetail.cfm?IncidentID=24443&siteCategoryId=3&T1ID=26&T2ID=35
  22. That's the 051 version (looks bigger in pic than it actually is) They live on top the crankcase on them. Im sure you will find the 048 flatter and prob all plastic.
  23. Ok thanks. I did use a thinner motorcycle clip rather than an actual jubilee clip. Maybe I should've used the old trick of spraying a bit of hairspray on It first to help sealing. Should be able to spray around it with some wd40 or similar to check any idle difference which should work shouldn't it?
  24. Rich, im thinking its a plug like this you need to be looking for New Stihl 028 038 042 048 Chainsaw Tank Housing Plastic Plug 9302 929 0400 | eBay Its a similar plug set up that the 051/075/076 use but flatter
  25. It uses the same oil pump as the 038/ms380 but don't know if its the same breather set up aswell if you look at the ipl for that?
