  1. we dont use sand, whilts is speads lovely as noted the grass will go yellow quickly as there is, well no nurtients in it. we use a fine grade sanded double compost from our local green waste merchant. all green wast debris rechurned and churned and churned again and again, its not cheap at £32m3 but its superb and we also use it for our raised beds and vegatable beds we build. s
  2. how can that Ash log, yield £1200 or more? or am i missing a serious trick somewhere
  3. I looked in to that trolley. What a cost! Gonn make one with two wheel barrow tyres i feel
  4. It is rather nice. Only showed a few of the boards but many have significant colouration to them. Looks like at some point someone wacked home copper nail as well some greeney tint to one endbof the tkmber. It was gonna be made in to a rustic style chair but feel a good table top will come from it. Just need to ask about kilning a few slabs in 8 months time and costs involved. Simon
  5. Thanx. Will keep me eyes peeled
  6. now, dont get me wrong here, ive never posted any footagwe of my work. but i totally agree here. perhaps a modification of your risk assement is over due, if your groundie finds this when you up the top of the tree? after 17yrs exp climbing, and 10yrs working for my college assesor as a a main climber, i know how to tie knots, and using some sort of double wrapped overhand granny knot is not good in my view. also that knot in the rope reduces the working limit by huge margins if used on BIG timber and i would certainly not be proud of showing these vids to the open world on utube. and that goes for a sink at that angle as well, or was it a step cut? now, you dont know me, and i don know you, so perhaps the above comments are harsh. but 1 video was enough for me. in my view showing any form of professional work needs to be up to scracth to be shown on this type of site. sorry. good luck:001_smile: s
  7. taking a reading from the side of any timber is not recomended. most moisture travels thru the ends of logs not out thru the side. take a reading from each end, and a middle and average.
  8. 1000k a year. wow thats cheap. ive just bought a 1000ltrs and that was £766 and will last 3 months if iam lucky:thumbdown: logs here will do 70 tops hard delivered but iam burning most of mine to keep warm myself:001_smile:
  9. Well, a big thanks to Welcome to Copford Farm Sawmill, oak, green, seasoned, beams, saw mill, Horam, Heathfield, East Sussex, BS5756, TRADA, timber grading, graded oak, grade, TH1, TH2, THA, THB, Alex Gingell, Harry Gingell, sustainable, restoration, timber supplies, supp for milling a real ugly lump of Yew i had taken over there. After a cuppa tea, and a big 1/4" gauge 6" nail in the wood which harry caught with the mill, we started to get some good looking boards. then, after another 3 nails and 3 blades later a few more boards arrived. the colouring due to the nails was quite intense, as was the language!!! the boards where 7ft long by upto 25" diameter Harry and Lex, a big thank you simon
  10. And my stihl 090 will smoke all of the above as well :D But thats not a mid range saw. Thats a BIG saw:001_smile:
  11. Ive got love for the older 064. Power to weight is exceptional and runs a 36" no problem.
  12. my birthday last month and a mate came up and had a play. he bought some wood along, here its a small lump of ash.064+36" mill [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QGdHK6Fvips]Sawmill in action MVI_5131 - YouTube[/ame]
  13. Marine ply is for any external or internal use where water may be an issuse. Does not soley have to be "salt water"
  14. Not being funny. But shouldnt you talk to your accountant? You will pay tax in july. Then half up front there on in. So if you tax bill is 7k in july you will pay 10.5k. Then jan if you earnt more tgey will charge you as needed.in thw last 10yrs ive never had a rebate.
  15. managed to get going with the spalted holly and sort of got carried away and made me a small table. http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/woodcraft-forum/56194-spalted-holly-worm.html Outside temp has been around 6deg during the day with humidity of 56%. So ive brought the new addition indoors and placed it in our cool hall way which is 7.5deg during the day and a humidity of 68%. The item has been sanded and had BLO added and ive covered the ends flush with paper bagz. So, the question is is there two wider gap in the humidty which will cause excessive cracking? And which is the main factor. Heat or humidity Thx simon
  16. hope thats not my Yew Harry! simon
  17. Its pretty sound. Was thinkin of applieing sum wud hardener. Any thoughts on its use?
  18. What! Right on my doorstep. Cannit be seen from the rd?
  19. looking good Alec, you found a 90 in the end then, did you have that bar in stock or did it come with the saw? mine has breathed some life, just awaiting for a carb kit, then we should be up n runnin! good to hear she pulls an 88" bar ok:biggrin:
  20. where abouts Jon?
  21. if i cut the other two remaining sections i wont be, but ive got two gud planks from the first log, and the third is the legs above
  22. Guys, Came across a dead standing Holly tree at the base around 18" diameter, but decided to cut it in to 3 sections. 1 x 4ft 2 x 3ft. it showed significant signs of wood worm. so i dragged the smaller section out today, milled it and as expected worm was throughout. but, does the holes detract from the wood? would you use or discard the pieces? i have two good sections with splating and minimal worm in it. the whole tree has the worm but we dont get many large hollies around here i can cut! what you reckon, keep or logs,
  23. Just a little update. Got the saw all cleaned and tip top, and finally had its day in the woods with a new 18" bar and chain. Wow, this thing runs like a RABBID dog from water! everything ran sweet and she cut big ash logs, oak rings most of the day. The oil stain on the exhaust has since disapeared as its now running the right mix ratio. turned down the oiler as that was on max and there is no apparant leak as first thought through the gasket. Nice just been bolted to the alaskan ready for duty over the weekend! a good £157 spent Simon
  24. that plane looks loverly, green or seasonded i presume. i milled some Holm oak with a friend on Tuesday, and the figureing was very similar to that plane. dont forget tung oil, whilst "food safe" may not be to everyones liking, especially for people with nut allergies!!!!
  25. i thought i took an image, and i did! the oil stain does not appear to of come from the muffler, as i took that apart and it was dry and carbon coloured. looking at the base of the muff, that i where the oil seapage appears to be its worst. i have new oil and fuel in and only ran it in a few cuts as ive man flu the only other, was when i took off the starter cover and worked on the saw, oil seaped from the lower torx screw hole. ive just got hold of a manual for it, so will have a look whats where. thanks, Simon
