  1. yes forgot about that bit remiss of me very good but to short again
  2. Prince Charles is the patron of the national hedgelaying society. if you looked close you will see he has his badge on his coat with his gold bar underneath. very few have one of them. given to those who have given and supported hedgelaying. or for long service in hedgelaying.
  3. that will be John Savings of oxford one of the top cutters in the country and fortunet to have had a training day with him worth going on a course with John learn a lot if you want to lay midland style. but other very good cutters South of England hedgelaying do training days and they have a few who go to highgrove for the comp plus the guys you know. and surrey hedgelaying society have got one or two who have been to charles pad. love to go need to win some big comps. or go as a caddy for a hedge layer.
  4. yes the trailer did not show it very well and the clip was not very long. could have given a bit more time over to the hedgelaying and less on the other stuff. but the producers are trying to sell to the townies. what the country is like and sometimes forget that there are people who would like to see some of the documentaries a bit longer and more in depth to put it over better. i sure there is over a hours of filming now siting in the waste bin not shown. have a chat to a guy i know see if he can get me a uncut version of the hedgelaying. see who i can recognize.
  5. have to say Charles is all for his hedgelaying and has a comp every year at his estate for invited cutters. most being supreme cutters in there own right. and he looks after them all with hot food and coffee laid on plus trophy's . but Charles is a very good hedge layer and if any one needs someone in high places to promote these things then all power to his cutting elbow. plus it may get some work for cutters after tonight so it is all good telly in this respect.
  6. you need to apply to HCC to get on there aproved list of contractors once on they will if needed get you to tender for work. but HCC have there own arb gang. but know a couple of firms who are on there list and do work for them. its getting on that approved list. good luck speak to there procurement section should be able to put point you in the right direction. but being in the forest you should be in with a good chance. especially if we have high winds and need a road clear and its near to you would call you out. during 87 storms worked solid for 3 weeks clearing roads for them good money then helped pay for 3 new saws plus a good sum over
  7. on tonight's programme had a bit on the hedgelaying comp at highgrove home of prince Charles. he was laying some hedge. and saw some top cutters in action Alan ashby of kent laying south of england good to see on main stream telly. did you get a invite Dorset. doing many styles.
  8. Dorset you would have been well at home on the island the bank was higher than that. and laying south of England. have to come down new season and do some Dorset style to learn how to lay on top of a bank. need ice grips on boots:thumbup: so the bit you had was not good either luck of the draw. judges never take into acount the bit you have is crap so will not be a silk dress when finished. but thats comps and judges. just need to smile at them and offer to buy them a coffee.
  9. having seen and tinkered with the yellow perils. i would stear the Atlantic ocean from them. but as good as the Chinese copy saws. stick with husky,sthil,oleo-mac. you know it will last and work when you want it to not when it wants to
  10. saw the first bumble of the season today and first jasper on Tuesday. plus skylarks singing on hill i was working on nice to hear them. downside found a injured buzzard been hit by car took to vet but sadly unable to save it shame nice birds still saved it being pecked by rooks.
  11. good plants is murrey Mc Clean abingdon very good plants. getting very near the end of planting season. i plant by the mtr so cost plants plus bit for sorting out plants and my time.
  12. if its double planting native hedge do 5 to the mtr boot apart. depends what the plants cost plus guards and canes. looking at aprox £3 for 5 plants guards £1 canes 50p theres £4.50 a mtr then your time how many mtrs can you plant in a day. poss 4 days maybe less. there are those who plant a lot who will say what they can do in a day,
  13. if you can find one toro, JD, Honda. depends what your budget is how big are the gardens would a ride on with a collector do the job.
  14. hi brassraptor good to see another cutter on board getting quite a number now and good to see the hedges laid. got to finish off this hazel hedge washed out today. so will crack on tomorow. then as you say that be it for year untill september, but if any cutters local will be at the countryside day at sparsholt in mAY believe its the 18th we will be demonstrating hedgelaying so if you want to come along for a cuppa and a chat more than welcome. good day out.
  15. how much more will they extract in stealth tax. woodchip is woodchip and if it has been from a felling then is that not sustainable. whats going to happen to those who take as much woodchip they can get from tree surgeons will they all need to be approved to offload. and pay to have another permit to dump there chip or will there be a loophole for this.
  16. £60+ per day longer you have it cheaper it is i hire one for a week can get a 2 tonne kubota for £150. do not get it sometimes smaller the digger dearer to hire. so normaly get a 1.5 to 2 tonne machine more grunt so can do a lot more work than with a small one. there good the 0.8 o 1 tonne brigade if acess is tight. i do not know if you have in plant insurance but a no of the plant people will not hire without it. the tool hire who can be dear do have insurance as extra if it gets nicked. so i go to the plant people to get good rates only cost me £90 for year for insurance. if using them a fair bit save yo money in the long term
