  1. It might be common knowledge/ practice, but always park your car/truck facing the way you would be leaving, 3 ptn turns with no leg is hard work.
  2. Why compare a small shop and a massive farm/ estate Small shop- small farm Big shop- big farm your question would still be same.....
  3. Glyphosate applied with a weed wiper , seems to have failed Plants started to turn , then just the point of contact died, leaving the rest of plant looking green. Chemical might have worked itself thru the plant, but atm it's seems not.
  4. Erhm- not sure if subsidies are paid to landowners and not the farmers? As far as I am aware it's paid to active farmers. It is ture that a few football clubs were paid farming subsides on their training grounds.... ( but of coarse that never makes tabloid press)
  5. A price for their milk, which is higher than it costs to produce... It's simples really
  6. Sounds a sensible method Eddie.
  7. To be honest, it was a more of a thought than a plan. That anchor looks handy, but for this job, it's easy enough to move the winch.
  8. My thought was to dig/ push 6 prong grapple into ground, and attach pulley to this (somehow), then log would be in position to pick straight up with the grapple and load. But it doesn't quite feel right. As for angle of the redirect, not sure atm, could be 90, but would hope to have it shallower if possible. Might just be easier/ cheeper to move winch every time. 8 is what the winch is rated at. Pull is more like 500kg
  9. Question- Would you use part of a mini digger (2.5ton) for an anchor point for a redirect? (Operator not sat in the seat) Small larch poles Tractor mounted winch- 8 ton pull
  10. They tried my workshop Saturday night, but the alarm went off and they beat a hasty retreat. About 3mths after they cleared me out of my stuff. Also south dorset,

    Fencing

Can anyone tell me how this hole is made? I want to renew some posts and rails. The rails are tapered and sit in the holes. On the middles post the hole goes thru the whole post. ( chainsaw seems a bit brutal and risky) Thanks
  12. Surely making a carving out of timber is not a "substainable use" of wood?
  13. I have the smallest lasco cone on a 2.7 digger. Can break down most lumps of timber, and can lift and move around most lumps of timber. I've cracked open oak 1m wide. It might not be the quickest way of doing it, buts its done and my back is fine. I have never used a cracker- but i wonder if they are limited by jaw width. I wouldn't reckonmend a screw on anything other than a digger, as you need to alter angles all ways.
  14. I sometimes suffer from this- I went to a physio and he show'd me how to work the tendon/ ligament as it runs though the elbow- when he first start to touch it, it was like tanging an elastic band, hurt likes hell, a few minutes later it loosened and the general hurting on movement of the elbow reduced. Further work on it by myself solved the problem. When I feel it starting to ache, I work the tendon and it subsides. I would recommend a trip to phyiso... The problem is sort of similar to carpel tunnel, but not caused by a muscle.
  15. I think they've missed a trick- they could be colour coded and with a simple double opening you can change colour of one half, maybe different colour for different rating.......
  16. All the best for your recovery Sean, And on a side note - the nhs is the best, even though sometimes it might not seem it. (IMO) Rob
  17. My uneducated guess would laurel or holly
  18. I think there's a firm in south dorset that has/had a trailer that they use for burning up in, mainly for use on heathland. It might be quite site specific as I can't see it being hauled on main road.
  19. I used to have one, It was a pig to put it on, the top linkage ( bulky top link) could get bent quite easily. Making it even harder to take off and put on. The controls were cumbersome, and the manovering was awkward, you could never quite get in the right place. It was powerful, is about the only good thing I can say about it. ( light figured people like to cut the pipes and take the pto motor with them.)
  20. Lucky we don't really have too much tricky terrain, but it's certainly worth baring in mind. Might also be a bit unstable turning. The tractor is only 2m wide. I think the skid plate is wider than that.
  21. I would be hoping to get the tractor on demo to test if it fits. The main reason for the tractor is to run a topper, so I need to try it on that aswell.
  22. Cool thx, The tractor would be jd 5055 and the winch is uniforest 85 ( I think).
  23. I wondering if anybody had any thoughts on running a winch on an under powered tractor. The winch is rated for 75hp or above- and i want to use it with a 55hp tractor. For big pulls i have the corrected sized tractor, but for small pulls/ skidding i was wondering about using a smaller tractor. Do you think that it will be next to useless? I am fairly certain the tractor would lift the winch- and with a few front wieghts would probably not be too light on the front. I can't try it at this stage as its still in quote form. thanks Rob
  24. I thought it was wise to leave the logs a bit to allow the woods natural resistance to fungi wear off ? Should the logs be left flat on the ground or lent against something? Or just chucked on the leaf litter?
