  1. I wondering if anybody had any thoughts on running a winch on an under powered tractor. The winch is rated for 75hp or above- and i want to use it with a 55hp tractor. For big pulls i have the corrected sized tractor, but for small pulls/ skidding i was wondering about using a smaller tractor. Do you think that it will be next to useless? I am fairly certain the tractor would lift the winch- and with a few front wieghts would probably not be too light on the front. I can't try it at this stage as its still in quote form. thanks Rob
  2. I thought it was wise to leave the logs a bit to allow the woods natural resistance to fungi wear off ? Should the logs be left flat on the ground or lent against something? Or just chucked on the leaf litter?
  3. Logs cut, just need to leave them a while before I place the plugs. Any advise on where to place the logs once planted. Thanks Rob
  4. Has anyone grown mushrooms in logs outdoors, from plugs. I ve got a pack of shiitake dowels. Just got to find some suitable sized oak that needs thining.
  5. Do trees scream when they fall over? My mate reckons he heard one.....
  6. Hi, I am trying to find out info on an old Husqvarna saw that was stolen from me. I need to try to figure out which modern saw is the best to replace it with, similar cc and build quality (it has to be husqi for the insurance) Husqvarna 268 thanks rob
  7. Having recently been cleared out of chainsaws and brush cutters, I am looking to improve my security in my farm buildings. Has anyone got any stories of "tool vaults"? Have they stopped an attempt, or failed dismally. Along the same thought process- can you store saws vertically- with bars downwards and back handles upwards. I was thinking of a shelve with slots in it. Worried it might have an adverse effect on the anti vibe springs and rubbers. Any thoughts? Thanks
  8. Anyone heard any stories about aldi, lidl buyers messing around with uk suppliers? I haven't, and I've never heard of their buyers at all. (I just sold 16 prime beef animals to tesco's- a further 70 to go before May. Not directly to to tesco's, but they paid me a premuim above the market price of beef.) Not sure if I understand everyone's ""beef" with tesco's Rob
  9. Hex blocks might work- are they readily available to buy? I like the idea of making your own, but the time taken to make them might push the price too high. Chrisj - would they burn like a candle- from one end exposing new shavings like a wick?
  10. Jon- I don't have space for kindling ( in the place I want the flames) Firelighter with (2small)fir cones did almost do the trick. Thanks rob
  11. Hmm, that might work, thanks Darrin
  12. I am looking to make something that can be lit very easily. And the it has to be flaming for longer than a fire lighter. Sry for unclear description, bit of a new idea to prove money grows on trees....
  13. Thanks for all the suggestions- pine/fire cones seem to help and will fit with the concept. Baby bel wax does indeed burn well. Pringles,Doritos and nappys yet to try but I will as the inner pyro must be fed sometimes.....
  14. Wil try both ideas- would the red wax off a baby bell work?
  15. As the title says- are there any sort of products that are the same sort of size but might burn longer? Or have people found different makes that burner better than other brands? Is firelighters gel a contender? Ps not for lighting a log fire, so wet wood isn't the issue....
  16. I have no evidence or certain knowledge on this matter, But I have a niggling feeling that if an implement on the the tractor is used by the tractor- such as the mower/mulcher on the above jcb it's classed as part of the tractor, similar to loader or bale grab on telehandler. Transporting the digger is a different machine, and therefore require different things- of which I wouldnt have a clue about Doesn't help get a definitive answer, sorry
  17. I am sure there are many white bridges like that- but it does look like Wareham bridge on the quay. Enjoying reading your working holiday blog.
  18. Sent your pm john
  19. I have the smallest model lasco cone- fitted on 2.5 ton digger. I haven't really split pine wood. But I have split oak. 3ft dia oak would be right on the limit of effectiveness. It would do it- but the time spent might not make it totally enconmical for logs. I presume pine splits a bit easier. Knots would make it harder. Forks on oak sometimes fall apart with the cone- other times I give up and chop it off. I have no experience with crackers so can't compare. My cones is for breaking oak branches down to then be able to go on hakki eagle saw bench. Hope that helps I am in south dorset if you want to see one working
  20. this made me smile yesterday
  21. My memory of the 87 storm was later that year, helping out my forester aunt counting blown over trees in a plantation. I was useful as a kid to climb and weave my way thru the devastion. I had to mark each tree at the root plate, so I could tell it if I had counted it allreAdy. I think it was an over stood plantation of willow. ( now a completely flat mess of willow) I got bored thru the morning and the can of spray paint in my hand had to be used. I am sure it caused some amusement in the mill once the timber was finally extracted.
  22. 6430 - awaiting insurance work on the rear wheel arch and roof- if you can see the rear lights held by baler twine
  23. It's for a student studying forensic science at Uni. In the morning they are studying bullet wounds, and in the afternoon burning the carcass.
  24. Cow work in the morning, funeral pyre in the afternoon. ( to cremate a deer) All in a farmers day.....
  25. Aren't there hundreds of industries that are supported by tax payers (eu or uk) - renewable energy sector, conventional power plants, nuclear power, car manufactures, new small buisnesses get help, I am sure there are others.
