  7. I know, one mans big is another's mid sized tbh, many a 'big' tree have I been called out to, to find its under 12" dia at ground, and just level with the house guttering, others have been monsters! But if the OP gives a date for the work, size of trees and where abouts in Somerset, I'd be very interested Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App

  12. We can't all work in that bubble though, what I'm saying is this: there is no organisation that represents the majority of tree workers, you have the AA who represent a tiny amount of elite type workers, FISA who do FC based work, who want their members/contractors to be up to date with industry standards and best practices, but nothing inbetween, unfortunately those under FISA are now moaning like hell at being told 'be up to date' with what they do, ok it doesn't make sense to only bother with those doing mainly softwood cutting (though I suppose they're assuming everyone does mostly softwood), if they don't like it, don't do it, someone else will. But we do, on the whole, need a main body of representation, I used the AA as an example, they're a site sponsor, and the most widely acknowledged within the trade, but they wouldn't have to accredit every person if they took lead and represented the trade, a two tier system could be quite easily implemented, with those who are currently AAC being main large contract workers, whilst the non-AAC members being given perks such as representation, newsletters/magazines with developments within the trade, etc Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  13. I read it, I also understand how the general public think, first search on the computer, if they want it done immediately, 2 blokes will get called for quotes, if there isn't a rush, a fair few will give quotes, and most clients aren't gonna mooch around looking for a guy to cut the tree or hedge back Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  14. What advertising, if you google 'tree surgeon' the top hit isn't the AA website, and of the 14 based on my post code, not a single one was AA accredited, even though the most local bloke is, so not much use for him, not being on the list. And with modern technology, first hit on the internet wins Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App

  17. Yeah, arboristsite regularly ends up in an argument about oil, fuel and what bar length should they use on an ms240, 24" or 32"? Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  18. Ok forget the AA, it was the first organisation that sprang to mind, I'm sure that those affiliated already pull in the extra work not to want more... Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  19. Corgi/gas safe - 2 years, so 6 months longer than an arb apprenticeship scheme And a fiver extra per man per job won't break the bank As for danger, we're waving metal boxes filled with flammable liquid and sharp bits around to make big heavy trees fall down, or at least some are... And mr b, what sets the standard that an AA registered arb works at? Could a person not work at that level straight from college? And whilst on the idea of college arb courses, which colleges offer any nptc tickets? I had to fund all of mine! Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
