  1. Yup Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  2. Cut the bark off all the way around the tree, just to the sapwood, can be done with a pruning saw, chainsaw, knife, I've even done it by beating the bark off with a block of wood Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  3. Dunno, I'll have a look at mine in a min Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  4. Yup but can you say you've never seen a messy job and thought 'why do people hire these morons?', I just think it makes our industry look bad, and on another note of looking bad, ax men is on itv4 on Monday, I wonder how many idiots will watch it and think 'I can do that!', drop a tree through something and push the insurance up? Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  5. Oh I can, I just see too much gyppo work done by so called professionals, even worked for a few, I just would like to see a standard set, those who are against the refresher obviously have something to loose, but grandfather rights are gone next year too, so people may as well have the tickets to show. I'll gladly refresh next year, might learn something new! After all, I've worked with a fair few of those who've had tickets longer than I've been alive, I out cut em all, I do it safer and more economically, why? That's how we're taught Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  6. Nice one, had thought of learning it, but never had time or the chance at the same time Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  7. Thank you, my points exactly, it's about time this industry grew a set! The Americans have it down to a fine art, as do the Canadians! All those yarping on about the apprenticeship schemes, they do one, it's an employment basis 18 month course, yeah not much time, but it's a learn on the job, couple that with tickets and refreshers, you've got an industry standard! And I was told when I asked about refreshers, 'it's about a day, 2 if you're very rusty, and 3+ if you're crap', so given that, add an extra few quid per job, you'll recoup the costs well before your next refresher Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  8. Easy, unbolt the one screw, then there is another inside the spring, thin Allen key to undo it (4mm I think) Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  9. Very few colleges offer the tickets now without paying the full price and doing the course as normal. And the only way we can sort out the over-saturation is by dreaded legislation, refreshers, updates, standardisation and organisations, with the AA being capable of setting a standard. Every other trade has a union to represent them, why not forestry and arboriculture? Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  10. Refreshers aren't free now, but lining someone else's pockets isn't as bad if the costs are easier to recoup by making it harder for competition by having a select few who can continue with the work Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  11. Yup, that's how I have to do my 560xp and ms150t as my nice chunky metal stop doesn't fit them, and yes, I use a metal stop, I like it, unlike the plastic ones, which snap. You just move the piston up slowly, works a treat Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  12. We should then, it would eliminate a lot of competition, it would also reduce the saturation of our industry Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  13. And once it's big enough to be a problem, you can butcher it back to 8', it'll grow like buggery again, it'll go hollow and birds will nest in it too!, just repeat the cycle, plenty of firewood Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  14. Moan moan moan moan! Who here complaining about refreshers has utilities tickets? Or has sprayer tickets and is on the contractor sprayer registers NASOR or NRoSO? Gotta do refreshers for those! I personally welcome it, should weed out the bad operators, also the information should be pitched to the public, so they understand more about registered operatives. Works with gas safe, corgi and all the construction trades, why not us? Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  15. Salix caprea, as mentioned, goat willow, they are fairly quick growing and separated into male or female trees, you'll tell by the flowers in spring, nice tree, the flowers attract bees Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  16. I've done ring barking with a farriers paring knife, the u-shaped blade is ideal for the job Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  17. So you wipe your arse with 99 flakes, stihl files, your dog and someone called Andrew? Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  18. Ah leave niko alone wyk, he IS European, he's just spent too much time on AS, habit of the arguments on there, stihl/husky threads and all Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  19. No, it won't sap much, Tbf you wouldn't notice unless you were using over 18" Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  20. Are lime burrs any good for turning? Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  21. Well, yes petrol goes stale, how long before it does? How long is a piece of string, you never filled a petrol can and thought the fuel smells dodgy? Same as over time, the oil separates from the mix, the fuel changes composition, making it less volatile, and therefore flammable, sure you can put stabilisers in, but even that only slows the process, my dealer told me a month, 2 years before I used aspen, I never bought my 2t oil from them either, they had nothing to gain, it states it in manuals! Back to fuel going off in a few weeks, we have a petrol tank where I work (a pump type) that holds 1000l, it lasts up to 8 months! I can guarantee, whilst only mixed that day, the fuel is poor, extremely so, the machines run like a bag of nails, need de-coking on a 6month basis, most need carb kits, won't start easily, run sluggish, where as my machinery runs on aspen, it starts after a few pulls, they rev better, and higher, the machine beds in better, giving more power, whilst this is all opinion you must admit that all the users who say the same thing can't just be making it up Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  22. Fixed that post for you! A 4-stroke stihl chainsaw would weigh the same as the saws do now, the plastic and metal would just be paper thin at the rate they're going Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  23. Quip, we get you don't like / see need for aspen, you're sounding a bit broken record now though! STFU arguing about it, those that do, will continue using aspen, those that don't, won't! If you don't, don't post 50 times saying you don't because of price, fuel consumption, dealer availability, whether your helmet is orange, pink or green, or even if you're using stihl or husky, the thread is here to show what damage CAN be done with stale petrol, issues with saws being converted to aspen, and people's opinions on said product, yes you've aired your opinion, we got it the FIRST time! Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  24. Hornbeam!!! Hazel of some description Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
  25. Yes, more hallucinogenic than liberty caps, but mainly affects size perception, I've never tried them, but know a fair few who have Sent using Arbtalk Mobile App
