  4. that forestor needs a bit of a tidy up but once working should be a great saw. pity i've no space as i'd love one like that.
  5. for some reason i did a few when i was in the older years of primary school, here's one. LIFE My life has been short but there are lots of things I know. One of them is that we’re destroying tomorrow! We kill the birds and then the bees, Then we chop down all the trees. We do this to keep ourselves alive But we are all in for a big surprise, Because when we’re finished and everything is gone We’ll look back and say we’ve done this wrong! We can’t turn back the clocks, It’s killed itself. It started off well, But we just couldn’t work it out. Like a fire that didn’t get going LIFE KILLED LIFE!
  6. will that work with other aromatic woods like macrocarpa?
  7. i'd happily use it but unfortunately i'm in slough. do you have anything else i could put on the lathe???
  8. this one is also a favorite of mine ever since i saw the films on the american civil war by ken burns. a staggeringly good composition... . [ame] [/ame]
  9. a cover of mr cohens is one i'm hearing at the mo. [ame] [/ame]
  10. nice job there mate but if that is beech then don't forget to give it about 30 coats of danish to let it last as long as possible.
  11. if it's really straight then i think it's worth milling some of the larger stems is it not.
  12. sounds useful, which species of southern beech are we talking about here? there are a handful that go by the name of southern beech and i assume it's a species in the nothofagus genus but i'd be interested if the exact species can be identified.
  13. and what exactly have you two been drinking???
  14. if he's just starting out then get a second hand one. ebay is a good resource for this. Record dmx 24 woodturning lathe Scottish borders | eBay

  17. well i found out that carhartt don't ship to the uk and have taken you call that big's recommendation for ruffntuffclothing and bought a pair of these, Carhartt Ripstop Cargo Work Pant (B342) they are on sale at the moment so i ordered a pair of 40"x34" which should be big enough as the kind lady on the phone said that they are generous all round. they should arrive next week. thanks for all the help chaps.
  18. i've heard about carhartt before actually but i didn't know where to get them. arborwear aren't cheap are they. nor do they have the size i require in stock:thumbdown: i'll get in touch tomorrow and find out when they will have more.
  19. could you add some links please fellas. i have worn cargos in the past and am looking for some now but i need to get to the shops and try them out.
  20. beau, i have used rustins, liberion, blackfriars and now rye danish oils and to be honest i was never attracted to any particular one as such as i never thought that any of the brands were better than the others really, in saying that i am quite impressed with the mixture john has come up with for the "rye danish oil" and i will be sticking to this in the future...
  21. hi chaps, i'm looking to get some tough trousers to wear over winter and can't find any that i fit into. i'm a 41" waist and when i buy 42" trousers i can't fit into the legs as they are too skinny. ones i just bought from ebay were 11 1/2" from the crotch to the edge of the trouser when laid flat and i need 14" at least as the girth of the top of my leg is just over 27". where do most tradesmen with muscular legs get their work trousers? any brands would be great info please. also does anyone else have the same problem as me??? or have i just got big legs? any help appreciated fellas.
  22. big j, i'm curious as to why timber of that size is of less quality over a smaller diameter tree? or is it down to the amount of branches? 10 years ago when i was still a young joiner we were working with a batch of older growth doug fir from either british columbia or canada and the stability of it was very very good, i found out that they had to be over 60" to give nice stability (according the the old guy in the shop) and it was not often found even then, there's probably none left now.
  23. how did everyone else get on with the danish oil??? personally i have found it a great product to use and i don't think i'll be using anything else from now on...
  24. the red oak group are not durable hence why all durable oaks are in the white side of the genus. you can see the two groups here. The Wood Database if it's a good stem then i think it should be put to use but just not outside. it can be used for furniture, floorboards, interior doors, kitchens, skirting, architrave, shelving and anything else you can think of that won't expose it to the elements.
  25. can i have some advice about transplanting a tree please. we've a small oak in the middle of the lawn about 4' tall and about 7-8 years old as it kept getting mowed down when my dad was alive but he's been dead 5 years now. anyway, it's not in the right place and we've just dug a huge hole in the front garden as we've dug a bush out that was overgrown and i suggested that it go there. how big a ball need i keep on the oak to give it the best chance?
