tree's weren't designed they evolved, and they've evolved though worse conditions than these. all those tv experts an so called scientists will say that there could be problems but if the tree senses that it's ok to bloom i'll defer to 200 million years of evolution, not a scientist!

i just checked that live strong website and for someone who has 31 years behind him at 6'3", 235lbs and only lightly active i'm recommended to have 3128. if i put in moderately active then it bumps me up to 3527

possible result on the horizon. got a call this afternoon and i'll either get my lathe repaired and back to me by Thursday or i'll get the one that axminster use in their skill center to borrow until it's fixed... either way i should have a headstock on Thursday. helps to rattle a few cages...

well i tried talking to the top people but guess what, there not there... one is in London and wont be back till Friday and the other is out of the country. i composed a long and unhappy email explaining the whole situation and warning that if this takes too much longer i'll be wanting compensation for loss of earnings... i keep getting told repeatedly that the headstock that is sitting in the high wycombe store can not be loaned as it compromises the whole lathe making it unsalable... another downer is that they will only deliver it at their convenience as i don't want them to use the courier as they've already damaged it. if i had one of my products damaged in the post then i would replace it immediately... any one know how to get compensation through loss of earnings??? .

well it's been collected but the damage must have been caused by the courier as he was certainly not careful with it. i've demanded that when it comes back they use there own service and not a courier as i'd rather have it back a day later than in bits again.

i think it just stop's your logs flying all over the place once you've struck them so in theory it should save time...

i will be complaining but i don't know if it will get me anywhere. as far as i know the original repair of the replacement bearings was sorted perfectly well it's just that it came back damaged. i will be asking to speak to some one higher than the head of customer services and see if they can do any better. i was told that the collection has been rearranged for today but it's still not been collected.

fruit woods are very hard and very prone to splitting and cracking and can be sealed with anything really. your bog standards are wax, pva, hardwax oil but you can use just about anything that will seal the pores, even paint... i have a 5 litre tub of pva ready for any sealing jobs PVA Medium Black Label 5 litre | eBay you might think £30+ is a bit steep but 5 litres lasts a long time. you can save loads of unusual timbers by sealing the ends and either milling them later or cutting them up for woodturning blanks.

no teak is ring porous... i could do with some better close up pics to make a better id looking at the structure i'd say that its along the lines of keruing, lauan or balau or even dark red meranti but they can be hard to tell sometimes as the often look very much alike. i'm almost certain that its a timber from the dipterocarpaceae though. -
tell me about it, i'm at a loss as to what to do as there service is basically holding me to ransom and costing me money daily. what can i do?

come on fellas don't make me sick by putting up pics of lovely working lathes. mine still hasn't been recollected yet, they were supposed to do it yesterday but that never happened. if it isn't collected today then i don't know what i'll do. i really need my lathe as i'n currently out of pocket as i' had a stag do to pay for and john p's 084 chainsaw plus a few other bills that have gone out totaling to about £1600. whats annoying it i have jobs to do sitting here waiting to be done which could amount to £2000 redressing the balance fairly quickly but i still don't know when this lathe is going to be sorted. aaarrrggggghh:cursing:

20" is still a good size for pear, most fruit woods don't get that big. definitely milling material on the main stem and all the small bits would be of interest to us turners. seal the ends immediately to stop too much cracking

you lucky bugger... sadly i got in to turning just to late to be able to purchase the euro 2000 but it would have been what i'd have bought if it had still been in production

although i do like the osmo i will use danish on one or two timbers as they get a brilliant finish that looks different from the osmo and you can buff the danish to a better shine if you wish with multiple coats. wenge is one that springs to mind as it can be sanded to a glass like finish and then buffed which is better than using the osmo on this occasion but each to there own.

why is everyone so quick to tip anything that wont burn???? i'ts a great turning timber as its fairly hard once dry. what size is it? if the wood is still in good nick it should be milled or turned in to bowl blanks.

yes i am looking at it from a customers point of view but oak is one of the most numerous trees on this bloody island, why isn't it cheaper? in my opinion it should be around the same price as beech which is £15-£20.
