  1. even thought the sun has popped out i expect it to keep raining as per forecast and add to the flooding you probably saw on the news yesterday.
  2. bad luck mate, it didn't float away did it???
  3. i live close to all these places that were on the news yesterday was born here and i'm 31, never heard of this before. mum has been here or around here for 66 years and she'd never heard of it before yesterday. places like ham island often flood when it gets high but datchet, windsor, marlow, cookham and parts of maidenhead are completely submerged. a new chapter in the record books
  4. they probably used dynamite on the giant redwoods in the old west times. no sawmill can cut 20'
  5. i'll add av gloves to my shopping list then alec. its currently at chaps (had to look those up), AV gloves, aspen fuel and the proper oil for the chain. john p recommended that it have a service so if my friend cant help me then i'll have to find someone who does it professionally. stihben is only in gerrads cross so could ask him but there is a place not far away that will service it. i hope to mill my first log by the end of the month...
  6. yes it's the oily button model and was apparently exceedingly good for milling but this was only a coincidence that i've bought it with milling in mind... i don't really know anything about saws but i thought if i don't buy one now it will only cost more in the future. i just looked at it and cant see a date on it anywhere on the outside or under the cover for the air filter. having taken that off it needs a clean under there but i'll leave that for another day.
  7. always wondered what that stood for... yes mine is an 084 AV but i dont know what year it is, i'll have a look tomorrow. as its an AV saw does that mean it'll be kind on the wrists as i do have a dodgy right joint.
  8. no acronyms please guys, i don't know what they are??? i'm guessing av is "anti something?"
  9. oh com on fellas, i just wana see someone blow a trunk with dynamite... i saw it done on kevin mcclouds build your own shed or whatever it was he made, but admittedly they were nice clean and straight boles..
  10. go on post the pics...
  11. suppose it is a bit knotty, be fun to try a sick of dynamite though...
  12. good cutting but if you are going for strength why not cleave???
  13. agreed, how about a pair next time:thumbup:
  14. it did get my attention, i was really disapointed when i clicked on the thread:sad: nice carving though... how long did it take?
  15. ok dan its all been cut now and even though i lost one bit cause of an old branch that created a huge void that explained why that block was lighter there is plenty of good boards cut from the rest... in total there is 2.75ft3. with any luck i'll get some more soon
  16. hi all, just need a bit of advice on what ppe to purchase for use whilst i'm milling. i have ear defenders, face mask and steelies but need to know what trousers to get and if you need anything else. i'm confused by all the classes of trousers??? also what sizes do the small medium and large cover? i've a 36" waist and 34" inside leg... i'll only be milling on occasion with my recently purchased 084 and soon to be purchased (if i can find the dosh) 36 or 48" mill. any help greatly appreciated
  17. well you'll only know once its felled but if it's in good nick then it should be slabbed and used for a bench. the wood is perfect for outdoor furniture, delabodge uses it for his pub tables i think.
  18. its one of these MAKITA 5402-A - 415mm CIRCULAR SAW | eBay
  19. as per title really, would be interesting to get one for the sort of work that i do. does anyone on here have one???
  20. slash pine??? pinus elliottii.
  21. i always thought that when i'd seen a tree like that in the park or something that some **** had just painted it. i always thought lichen was small patches and never realised it could smother the tree like that.
  22. how about firewood...
  23. i'll be getting the rest of the tree at some point but i don't know if it's been cut up in to small bits like these or if it's still in decent chunks. i hope the latter as i'd like to get more of something that looks like a plank longer than 18"...
  24. sold to dan earp dan there is currently 1.16ft3 cut and i'll tell you what i get from the other lumps when i've cut it all
  25. very good turning wood. dont burn it any pics?
