  1. true john, i'll have to figure out how to use it first. you can see why i asked about the packaging of it now.
  2. i am going to rebend the fan back to it's knackered position before i send it back.
  3. three bolts hold the fan casing on and one of them has been sheared by the impact (how much force does that take?) and is still in the hole. the fan is bent and can not fully rotate as it fouls on a bolt. the main shaft has a new facet on it which makes me thing it was dropped but there's no busted box. i unbent the fan a tried to start it but nothing happened? i'm trying to get this sorted with axminster tools. i want them to replace it, wish me luck
  4. hi all just wanted to know if this has happened to anyone else. on the 9th of january my jet 3520b headstock was colected and sent off to have it's bearings replaced. took a while and whinging about it finally got it delivered this morning and thought yippee i can finally get on with some work as i've been bored out of my brains for the last fortnight. this is what i saw when i opened the box.
  5. expensive firewood indeed. green £15 but seasoned £25-£30 so potential £8000 worth
  6. if you mill it up there is potentially 250ft3+ with both trees and even selling green at a mere £15ft3 that's £4000+.
  7. never ring up such a nice big bit of timber...
  8. hmm, a bit bigger than my 20" rip saw...
  9. they are welly's as stated...
  10. how long did that take you???
  11. although not the same species they are related and have very similar lumber properties. Redwood | The Wood Database - Lumber Identification (Softwoods)
  12. depends what your applying it to.... i use it for my skittle pins just as a finishing oil to make them look a little better than bare wood. i make sure that the wood is sanded down so 360 or a worn 240 and give it a buff with its own shavings then i apply the oil with a cheap disposable brush and take off the excess with more shavings and spin at speed until superficially dry. i have used it on a skittle ally deck made of hard maple and i merely gave it as thin coat with the disposable brush and made sure there were no pools of it to wipe off and just left it there. it dried for the next few hours and they played with it that week. if you are to use it for furniture rather than turning then i recommend that you ask steve slack (slackbladder) as he will know more about the best ways to use it than me.
  13. i wouldnt be too bothered about the amount of teeth as the 20 tooth blade that comes with it should be fine. i have a no brand saw the same size and the blade that came with that leaves a very good finish. the trick is to have the work stable and well held in place and cut with a steady hand. this cant be taught in my opinion you need to learn it through experience.
  14. i would use beech for my skittles but everyone logs it up so there's none to buy???
  15. alec your inbox is full
  16. according to this interesting site, Bill's Saw Shop - Stihl chain saw specifications it's .4 bhp more powerful.

  19. hang on john p i did say i wasn't backing out mate. i'm buying that saw by the way i didn't get an email from you, try again with this address. [email protected] haven't heard from my mat but i wont bother talking to him for now.
  20. it did take a while but i was learning new techniques at the time and being a college course you do tend to dawdle a bit. if i had the plans, tools and materials i could make it in a day or two... if you want to see more then see the thread on my other projects. http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/woodcraft-forum/60100-all-my-woodwork-so-far.html
  21. damson is good for turning as is any fruit wood but if the tree is of a decent size i suggest you contact alec as he is looking for prunus to fit out his bedroom furniture with. here's his profile page. http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/members/agg221.html
  22. seems simple enough and it works. i remember someone telling me when i was young that you can achieve so much if you use the laws of physics... just wish i knew the laws of physics!!!
  23. it's people like that that make me wish he would win the award, not just be a contender... plonker
  24. doesnt supprise me. most people pooh pooh using softwood posts but things like leylandii do very well with no preservative. i still think you can beat a recycled greenheart pile though as they will last 30 years plus...
  25. having had a closer look i'm starting to think it's no sycamore now... could it be a liquidambar??? they are quite scaly all over...
