  1. yes i have had lathe troubles but it's all sorted now. will be posting again soon. this is for others too so nice to see other peoples work and would like to see your other bowls bobh. good laburnum.
  2. less massive boards too unfortunately...
  3. a sub forum would be fine, i think you could get a few in the woodcraft section. woodturning stick making rustic furniture fine furniture to name a few and possibly something to discus what to do with a specific species of timber.
  4. well yes but thats wood craft,i mean one specificly for turning not making silky handles or tree stump tables just wood turning. in my opinion chainsaw carving is a wood craft but it has it's own forum, is there enough room for a turning one?
  5. this thread is over two years old, i doubt there's any left...
  6. hi steve, there are already seperate areas for things like chainsaw carving , milling and hedgelaying. do you think there is enough of us turners on here to have a woodturning forum? Steve
  7. almost there, it's spelled ekki but is also known as azobe. Ekki | The Wood Database - Lumber Identification (Hardwoods) often called red ironwood and i can understand why a normal blade will be dull in seconds. turning it is a a real challenge as you are sharpening you're tools every few cuts. it doesn't surprise me that a tct blade wont go through nails as you can cut iron on a table saw... it shatters teeth, i lost a couple when i hit my thin steel rule with it so a nail is going to remove lots.
  8. i can see that road getting rebuilt a they wont move that sucker. it must be getting on for 1000 tons surely the first rock on their lawn would have been a warning.
  9. i could quite easily cut some blanks from one of them, they're only 5' long so i would only get 4-5 blanks out of a plank.
  10. i'd hate to see that go for fire wood, i don't think that there is any fungi involved in that as it's just very figured wood underneath i think... i might be wrong but i've seen a few trees with figure in the bark and they are gust figured timber.
  11. if it's that big mill some of it as its a lovely timber for tables. i'd like some to turn but it always gets logged up:thumbdown:
  12. i have a few planks if your'e interested...
  13. looks good i'll have to get one of my planks out and see how well i can do...
  14. lets see a pic then mate
  15. considering the wood is sooo pungent maybe the smell will persist?
  16. go on then alec whats stopping you mate???
  17. oh man, what i'd to have a saw like that...
  18. looks like the base of a beech?
  19. considering that the middle is missing it should not develop the classic radial crack but it's difficult to say really. if you can seal the ends then do, other than that just let it season very slowly is the best advise i can think of...
  20. the only way i can think of is to sand it to such a grade that you can no longer see sanding marks and buff it with it's own shavings. i think any oil wax or other finish would mask the smell. be interested to find out what you end up doing and if any smell is indeed masked as i have 6 planks @ 12" X 2" X 60" of the stuff which are either going to be resawn for furniture or turned in to bowl blanks.
  21. any sort of muck, and stuff from the table like vegetable skins, apple cores that will rot down. i don't see why ash should be used sparingly on a veg patch as volcanoes are some of the most fertile places on earth and they're not short of ash in those soils...
  22. there's no way of telling for sure as it's quite tricky to distinguish lots of those timbers apart. it's either one of the balau's or dark red meranti.
  23. if it's bone dry it burns great...
  24. very good turning wood there mate, keep each bit as big as possible...
