  1. i know fellas, i should stop trying to tell everyone what to do i suppose. it's my wish that everyone in the world should use trees to their full potential but not everyone seems to care as much as i. what would you contrast this wood with for a chessboard ian? i know your only joking dan, the brown oak will have lost a bit of weight by now but have got a lot on my plate for the next couple of weeks. with the offcuts i have i can see the wood mounting up, there will be one full pallet here...
  2. i give up:confused1:
  3. how could you...
  4. iroko would clog up the paper and feel oily so i think one of the meranti group is a best guess at the moment. end of the day dan if it's hard enough and you have a use for it, use it... if it's hard enough for flooring it will be useful for other purposes.
  5. that equates to 50lbsft3 so should be useable for some projects.
  6. contact big j. he'll tell you what it's worth in the round. http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/members/big-j.html
  7. that's something i suppose... it's so sad when such a magnificent specimen goes up in mostly smoke rather than milled. there would be some fantastic grain in that old beast
  8. why??? all that beautiful timber wasted...
  9. what state or condition is it in. kiln dried in to boards it can be £1000-£1225m3
  10. i'm starting to think that it may be yellow balau rather than plain old meranti. what does it weigh per ft3.
  11. is the colour in the base hard or so soft you can punch it?
  12. it does look more meranti like now but it still looks orange in the pics flash or not. add one in daylight tomorrow.
  13. please tell me that all the decent bits are to be milled and not logged...
  14. take a snap in daylight then ill be sure. the end grain does not look like meranti but more like iroko... Light Red Meranti | The Wood Database - Lumber Identification (Hardwoods) Iroko | The Wood Database - Lumber Identification (Hardwoods) see these two links and see what matches best. you said that it had orange in it? i've never seen meranti with orange in it only pink or red.
  15. it looks more like iroko in those pics mate, in which case it should be ok
  16. me too it'g gorgeous looking stuff and it seems to dry very happily too but i will leave that bit one for a few months before i finish it. would love to see some of yours when they're done.
  17. here's the big lump of catalpa i got from nepia
  18. some lovely looking work here guys, keep it coming.
  19. a tree that size will make some gorgeous timber.
  20. depends what you cal native. when i asked the ancient tree hunt what counted they said anything over 400 years growing in this country. my collins nature guide to trees of Britain and Europe states that the strawberry tree is a native plant but i do agree that not everything on that list is strictly native.
  21. it came with a 36" but as burrell says 60 is the longest recommended.
  22. dont think we need drought resistant trees considering the weather we've been having:lol: i'm a firm believer in going native to be honest. we've buggered up this world enough by introducing foreign species just because they look nice and sometimes the consequences aren't realised for decades. stick to things that helped make this country great before we imported from around the empire. we should plant, service tree, field maple, oak, beech, hornbeam, ash, rowan, elm, apple, poplar, elder, sycamore, aspen, willow, birch, alder, hazel, pear, whitebeam, cherry, hawthorn, blackthorn, holly, box, walnut, yew, scots pine, larch, juniper, strawberry tree and lime. did i leave any out?
  23. i just bought an 084 that i want to use for milling. if you get the mill we can use my saw to see how easy it is. be nice to actually use the thing, it's just sitting there at the moment.
  24. could try the crown estate for your singles as they have 3500 acres to pick from and all those species i think.
  25. i'd be interested in that too but as no one seems to import them i'm stuck looking for other methods. can't find another maker of anything like this that fits to a chainsaw though. bit of a bugger as it looks a right handy bit of kit, just think of all those trees we could save from land fill if we all had one of them. does anyone else think that a grand is a bit steep???
