  1. never turned any before but i think stihlben had recently and posted them earlier in the thread. rather than it sit in the yard i would recommend it be split up the middle of the stem taking away too much tension that can build up radially. i don't know if it's a splitter or not but it bight be better not to take the risk
  2. the cherry is about 4"
  3. i've no yew but do have a lovely bit of cherry given to me by A peterson firewood & chip when i went over to meet him. seems quite dry but cant be sure. was going to turn it in to goblets but think it could be turned in to coasters too. interested?
  4. i'd love it but as i said i've got no dosh, or any way of getting it from dorset!!!
  5. nutters can be geniuses too you know...
  6. surely you should have used london plane to carve it from???
  7. ???? i was referring to crude oil... what other sort of crude is there?
  8. chocolate sauce??? looks more like an pocket of crude...
  9. does everyone else throw away bits with large cavities in??? this is the other half of the catalpa i bought from nepia and had a huge cavity in it with what look like internal roots i managed to turn most of it away and the end result is passable as a blank. lets hope it doesn't split at the rotten edge of the rim. don't think you expected the cavity to be quite that big did you jon? .
  10. it looks like a good bit o f burr robinia is the best out of all of them in my opinion. nice job clive.
  11. if the bowing has happened after you re cut it there is nothing you can do. for the splitting you need to split the tree down the pith to allow for radial shrinkage and minimise splits. when you cut a board that has the pith in it then expect to loose it or rip it down the middle when dry.
  12. no, the other 5% is skeleton...
  13. you may have found your market jon but this market just ran out of money... it sounds like it would best be milled in to small boards 2-3" and cut in to turning blanks. i would be interested in one bit if it was already quartered.
  14. that's probably right actually, i just saw 5 petals and thought malus but i think your on the money there.
  15. chopping logs for the fire gives me a good work out. i might use a chainsaw to crosscut but otherwise it's all hand work so no fuel costs (other than feeding myself) dont have a problem shifting logs as i'm 6'3" and 230lbs which is 95% muscle and to a certain degree enjoy it.
  16. i stick to what i'm given clive, it's all from savill gardens... there are a ridiculous number of odd species that they have planted over the years (usually by a foreign dignitary) including the odd exotic but usually weird variants on the more common ones. take that liquidambar for example, it's not liquidambar styraciflua as that has a rough textured bark. the bark on this looked very much like beech and the only sweetgum i can find that has a smooth bark is liquidambar formosana or chinese sweetgum. with the storms we had over xmas there are quite a few different species to pick from and i'll be getting some interesting timbers. the robinia is not something i've had before but really like it.
  17. just got a few different woods that i've not turned from wet before and i wish they would stay the colour they are when wet once they've dried out. london plane is such a nice pink with colourful streaks but goes quit pale. robinia is getting lighter by the hour. chestnut is doing the same and considering it's very brown when wet it's like pale straw now. the liquidambar is quite dark when wet but pales to a pink colour. at least the douglas fir stays either orange or pink.
  18. very striking for ovangkol...
  19. perhaps if it was illegal to chip anything over 2" we might not have a problem?
  20. well i got the catalpa from jon and it's great stuff (see bowl turning thread) but i'm on the look out for any more please. the bigger the better really. anyone got any?
  21. padauk might go well with it.
  22. one of my favorite timbers. good bowl too. have you used a uv inhibiting finish? take a pic in the sun and repost, it will look spectacular...
