  9. Handy little winch but I did brake it pulling out shrub stumps my bad. Now I just use this old beast! It's pulled out stumps so big you could stand in the hole and not be seen! on the down side you are left with a big crater takes two people to lift it, no idea how old it is Great bit of kit comes in handy
  10. The tree was at the back of the garden on a small bank that had been partially dug back to make the area flat and also a shed on a base directly next to it. So the root plate must of had some damage/compaction at some stage. The garden has a history of tree failure (wind throw) from what the customer said. I'll try to take a lot more pictures next time
  11. Okay thanks Colman for your opinion
  12. The tree had discoloured bark running up one side of the stem from the base (a dark reddish colour (no exudates) i believe it effects sycamores. some similar images on google when searching for sooty bark
  13. Yes it did have some bark damage at the base that looked typically strimmer inflicted In the pics I was looking at the circular discolouration if that was something to do with the above mentioned.
  14. took down a field maple today and was having a discussion on why it was in decline (not the reason for removal) it was mentioned it might have cryptostroma cortical (sooty bark) or maybe phytophthora. got a couple snaps of some cross sections (not the best ones) any thoughts? And whats the difference between these two pathogens? as far as i could tell phytophthora is a root rotter and can cause black bleeding cankers on the bark? and sooty bark turns the bark black? i was finding it hard to tell the obvious differences between the two.
