  1. Bandsaw if you want versatility and good depth of cut. I am fortunate enough to have both a circular saw and band saw and the bandsaw is the go to machine. Band saws can be picked up cheap and with a bit of fettling made to do precise work. Bought an old Wadkin for £200 pounds a few years back and it would be worth that weighed in for scrap.
  2. Think we are in and ELS scheme which requires pretty much complete copiceing. Anyone any experience on how strict they are on leaving a few extra standards?
  3. Surpised by that Jon. I have a few grizles about ours but lack of guts is not one of them.
  4. That's looks amazing but might be a bit much if you had to live with it.
  5. Think he may be cutting it up for himself.
  6. Haha nice one Graham. For those who don't speak dyslexic that's suposed to say GRANT farming.
  7. I can't argue with word of that as I know you are right but I like the whole process from tree to log. I try to sell local wood to local people. I am not in it for the money just want to be able to get by in life. There is wood available through a major supplier but my last dealings with them was not a good experience.
  8. We are fixing up a beech hedge on the farm courtesy of a grant. Only allowed to leave 2 trees per 100m or similar. Seems a right shame to have to take so many out. Going to leave a few extras and we will see what they say. Most of the time they never come to inspect this stuff anyway so may get away with it but if not will have to fell the rest I have know idea what the grant is as the mrs woodworks takes care of paperwork. Due to grunt farming there only two farms in our parish left with decent amounts of trees on the hedges and we are one of them.
  9. This for the big stuff and the rest through the processor. Hydraulic log splitters CV 18 K - Krpan
  10. Made my offer but it's been declined.
  11. I would if I could sell the stuff. Not ONCE this season as anyone rung up to order softwood but I have managed to talk a handful of folk into buying it. Still got most of it left though
  12. Thanks Rob As you say wood is proving hard to come by and logs seller with no logs just won't work. I can sit on a high horse and say I won't do it for less than X or just get on with it and get some free wood close to home.
  13. Yes I know him well. Frankly I don't see the problem. These trees are in a private field not a school playground and they are completely stable in the current position. He was only asked to fell so he did. What risks others take from here on is their choice.
  14. Haha I am only a second rate village idiot while you are a pro.
  15. Ravers dancing to the Benny Hill theme [ame] [/ame]
  16. No mate I love Devon. Yes sure the wages are poor so stuff like this will be done for free but there are so many great things about this county and it's people. Call me a village idiot if you like but I am going to offer to clear it for free and suspect he will get a better offer.
  17. Just gone down the Dmax rout after a Defender and got to admit the Defender was the better towing machine. Didn't notice the suspension as much as the ridiculous high gearing on the Dmax. 1st is is too high and you don't need 6th unless your over the speed limit
  18. Can't help with the question but are you sure it's oak as it looks a lot like elm in the pictures. Great looking boards either way
  19. What? You got job for me?
  20. Thanks Chris. I would leave to my mate. He was the feller with the winch and a JCB so would leave it up to him which way to do it.
  21. Think he is happy to have burn up in the field which simplifies that bit.
  22. Because the guy who felled has no interest in the wood and was only asked to fell due to him having a gert big winch. If I ask £550 I will not get £400 worth of wood. I am certain others around here will do the job for free. Think if I asked £550 they would piss themselves laughing.
  23. Message getting through loud and clear chaps Not dealt with such large awkward hardwood before so safety will be paramount. Plan of attack was clear what is safe and not under much load and get mate in with JCB to flip them onto their trunks. Sounds like I should not offer anything just clear for free but if ballibeg is right that's 8 tonne of wood that would cost me £400 to buy in. If it takes me 3 days to do it's still worth the hassle.
  24. Can't say I am a fan of the Logrite one as the tip does not grip well in the wood if you are looking to drag heavy lumps about. Think it's designed for picking up logs much how they show in their video.
