  1. "In terms of fairness asking for a full detail Arb impact assessment/methods statement/ tree protection plans etc when submitting a planning application that may well be refused for visual impact seems wasteful to me?" Look at it the other way round - how does the LPA know what the impact on trees will be when determining the application if the relevant reports/surveys etc haven't been submitted? What if thet approve the application with conditions, then it turns out that the scheme can't be implemented without compromising the retained trees? In theory they could refuse to approve the scheme for the retention and protection of trees but this could easily be deemed unreasonable upon challenge if it was foreseeable on the basis of the submitted plans (which it almost certainly would be). At the very least they could end up deeply embarrassed.
  2. Oh, you might be asked to provide you own PPE. If you're not using a saw that won't be too onerous though.
  3. No problem with it whatsoever. The employer's insurance will cover it (by all means ask him to check) providing you are not asked to do something for which you are not trained. It's an excellent way to find out a bit more about the job (it's what I did) and to get that all important experience.

    Elf n Safety

The cost to the tax-payer for ambulances, hospital and clinical costs, general practitioner consultations, and prescription costs arising from work-related injuries in 2009/10 was £608 million.

    Elf n Safety

If he'd killed himself the cost to the taxpayer would have been around £1-1.5 million.

    Nice one!
  7. Is that a compression union directly above the ffb?
  8. I'm sure the EU will get their teeth into it at some point.... Am I right in thinking it's illegal to sell by the cubic yard anyway? It's a 'legislative maze of Byzantine complexity'...

    Road Trip

I love Seahouses and Bamburgh - took the wife up there for the last week in March. The beach is pretty amazing - massive but not busy. And Lindisfarne
  10. Brilliant!!
  11. Couldn't let this one lie... Forestry Commission - Picture Library Image
  12. Technically you can tell her to get stuffed - you have no duty to allow her access to a TV signal. Ok, so in reality you might not want to do this so as to maintain good relations and all that but it gives you a bit of bargaining power.
  13. I presume there must be some sort of regulations covering work adjacent to railways but I couldn't find a specific set laying out who has to contact whom and in what situation. I'd be interested to hear if anyone knows for sure.
  14. The ICF would be the logical choice - the RFS isn't really a professional body in the same sense. Is he going to university to study or hoping to gain experience and skills on the job? Arboriculture and forestry are very different beasts so the AA may be less appropriate, although many aspects of arboriculture would be of interest to a forester, especially the tree health aspects as opposed to the purple ropes and anodised fasteners...
  15. Leafy gall? (Rhodococcus fascians) It could be a form of fasciation caused by a bacterium.
  16. They're looking for an engineering specification - "...specification for the sub-surface foundation design of the building..." It's not a very certain condition either; one person's 'minimised' is not the same as another's. Can the foundation pad be moved or is its position non-negotiable? If the latter they can't lawfully enforce the condition beyond the specification being produced.
  17. I know, but that's not what the OP said: "They have planning permission but the LPA have come back to them and told them they need to have a report done on the tree to show that they have considered it in their plans." If it is a condition, then fair enough, but that's not how it reads. Not to me, anyway
  18. All the obvious stuff will be second nature for (soon to be) former member of the Royal regiment. I will just echo this one though: "Be friendly and courteous with the customer and your fellow crewmembers. Be motivated and a self-starter. Set the pace for others to follow. Impress the customer! Dress and act professionally. You are representing the company that signs your paycheck. When your clothes wear out, stop wearing them." The money comes from the customer, and work can often be via word of mouth and/or return customers. They don't have to be always right, but they always deserve courtesy, respect and honesty. Demonstrate an attitude that shows how well you understand this and that a property left in a mess is a customer who won't do you any favours and you can expect to make progress with an employer. Don't ablute in their shrubberies. Don't drop tab ends on their drives. Don't swear in earshot of them or their neighbours. It's still mission and mates really.
  19. Not very professional of the LPA. Your client has either been granted consent or he haven't! They shouldn't even validate an application if it is submitted without sufficient information to address a material consideration. What exactly is the LPA planning on doing if the findings of the report are unacceptable to them?

    Milk it

The miners did indeed get a hard time, but that doesn't make it right that the farmers are all getting dry bummed now.
  21. A couple of rubbish pictures taken from behind a fence with an aging mobile phone in Regent's Park earlier today: And what looks like it could be the remains of an old Laetiporous
  22. What's a professional off road tyre? Ridiculous law, by the way.
  23. Indeed! Let's hope the teachers know how to make the most of the resource they've been blessed with

Oh, and no, the govt should stay out of pricing matters. We live in a free market (ish) and that's the way it should stay.
