  1. 14 days for a Notice of Intended Prosecution (NIP)? If you don't receive anything in this time they can't touch you for it. Not sure how you'll prove it though.
  2. Looks good to me too. Aldi just amazes me with the seemingly random bargains they have sometimes. I bought a load of motorbike gear from them once, which has served me very well.
  3. I had to do a similar one about 12 years ago - not speed related as such, can't remember what it was called - and agree with that. The morning was all about defensive driving (useful ways of thinking about other road users and where you fit into the picture) and the afternoon was spent driving with an ex-Police instructor. It was expensive (£250) but I'd been a bit of a naughty boy and it saved me from points. And I found it useful.
  4. Whatever next!?
  5. You might struggle to get the Lonsdale book now, as far as i know it's out of print.
  6. Solicitors give a free 30 minute consultation so you can get a professional opinion on how likely a court would be to accept your version of events. Did you get 3 points? For £80 (plus lost earnings...), I'd be tempted to let it pass, but points can be more of a problem. Very unlucky, by the way.
  7. The red squirrel idea is commendable, but where would you get them from? You can't just go to a pet shop and buy all their stock. Also, reds have only survived in areas where they are isolated from greys - is this something your imaginary woodland offers? Release programmes are highly scrutinised and managed as the highly limited numbers available mustn't be wasted by releases to inappropriate sites. Just a thought.
  8. B&Q certainly used to take it from independent producers such as yourself. Is Yorwoods still in existence? They should be able to advise.
  9. Delving into semantics (my chosen specialised subject ), I would say that options available isn't a factor until the diagnosis is complete; to put it another way the diagnosis is independent of all factors - targets, resources, amenity value etc - but the prescription is very much dependent upon them. Apologies if I misunderstood what you were getting at.
  10. Maybe pathogenesis isn't an ideal word to describe all fungal infections of live trees (pathogen = biological agent disrupting normal physiology). We could also argue long and hard about the saprobe/parasite boundary, but for practical purposes all this doesn't always matter. What does matter is the prognosis, which is a function of research and diagnosis, the latter flowing from the former. The more complete the former, the more reliable the prediction of the latter.
  11. Acer negundo. And that'll be a female tree.
  12. The peoples of the world... The People's Republic. Sorry for the massive derail. I'm off to the naughty step now. To fulfil my destiny.
  13. You could get really pedantic...agenda is a plural (of agendum) so you can't have an agenda
  14. Sounds interesting! Wedge fracture to C#7 - or in English, a broken neck.
  15. I don't believe in destiny in the religious/supernatural sense, but in a way we are bound to make the decisions we do. What separates this from destiny is the set of events beyond our control that occurs along the way. What's the topic for the PhD? I started one about 10 years ago on relatedness as a function of distance within tree populations but sadly the money ran out so it was never finished. I'd love to go back to it one day... So why am I where I am? A lot like your story really - I grew up with a love for the natural environment; collecting things, identifying things, reading as many books as I could. Ultimately my military career was cut short following an injury, so with little idea what to do I found a career centre that had one of these new-fangled computers with a package that asked you lots of questions the told you what you ought to be good at...and here I am nearly 20 years on.

I use it for posting work related information (news, research, developments etc) and most of the people I follow are followed for similar purposes. @Portcullistrees
  17. I've often wondered what possesses parents to name a daughter Candida
  18. Obviously this depends of the scale of the problem, but if you have the time you can achieve a lot with secateurs, loppers and a pruning saw. I tackled a 17th century farmhouse garden that hadn't been touched for 20 years like that once - it took 3 weekends, but cost next to nothing. If you can clear brambles by hand enough to get a mower over the area, they will soon die back with regular attention.
  19. I say good on you too. Each to their own, but just a little bit of appropriate timing can make a lot of difference.
  20. Paintball, mountain biking, school visits, orienteering, Forest Education Initiative....
  21. I couldn't open that thread either, getting the same (or similar) message. I was about to post something about it when Chrome blocked the site
  22. Very positive. Shame they won't be doing much remediation in the winter... But as has been said, this is development rather than innovation. Even the Victorians did it. It gets my vote though and should, in my opinion, be more widely used as a supplementary technology.

    Pets

Nothing at the moment (unless you count the wife) but over the years I've had many cats, several dogs (mainly springers, but others as well), rabbits, guinea pigs, locusts, praying mantids, a rat, a grass snake and a ferret. Oh, and 3 crows.
